Default Needle Valve Packing on an Essex Mixer

Recently purchased a 2hp Sparta that has an Essex mixer. The gland nut wich the needle valve passes through has no packing left in it. I made a new knob for the end of the needle valve and while working on it I noticed the packing missing. I'm sure once fuel is put to it there will be a drip of fuel around the needle valve. What can I use to re-pack the gland nut to prevent this? And where can I buy it?
Thank you,
Henry Macomber

The correct packing is graphited string, and it is usually available in the plumbing section of hardware stores, but for your application, a piece of cotton package string rubbed good with bar soap will work just as well. Soap is not dissolved by gasoline.

Tom,
Not to sound stupid here, is cotton string something you can buy or just pull a string from a cotton ball and saturate it with bar soap?
Thank you,

The kind of cotton string that I am talking about is fairly soft string about 1/16" in diameter that is sold as a ball. At one time, the US Post Office required that packages be tied with this type string. I usually get it at the grocery store or drug store in the section where they have tape and other packaging products. Just cut off a length and pull it over a bar of bath soap until it is well coated.

Tom,
The cotton string and soap worked great, thanks for the tip.
