Default Fairbanks Morse exhaust timing..new tool

Gentlemen,

Old Engines........New Tool!

I recently had occasion to adjust exhaust valve timing per "The exhaust valve lever should touch valve stem to open exhaust valve when the crank pin is between 35 and 40 degrees above outboard dead center." I did this by eye and it worked well. Then, later I realized that the digital level app in my smartphone would work well to get this angle easily and accurately.

(This is actually a good use for a smartphone!)

Warren

Good rule of thumb, the exhaust valve must close at or just after TDC exhaust stroke. Too early or too late will greatly affect engine performance!

Where are you placing the phone to measure the angle?

73eldo,
What I call the "throw", the two arms that hold the journal, or pin, that the piston rod connects to.
Good Luck,
Warren

They should make a "smart-magnet" to stick the smart-phone to the shaft! Maybe put a nice brass tag with the maximum rpm rating on the magnet ...

I use a magnetic protractor that I got from Harbor Freight a few years ago to set the pitch on airboat props. Works well on 5hp and larger flywheels if the application allows.
