Colin,

I watched the videos and I think that Frick sounds better in the other thread over this Reeves! I think I'm with you on the 110 over any Reeves!

I never called this my Reeves "Favorite 'sounding' Engine," only my favorite; as with any cross compound engine pulling, you are merely hearing the low pressure cylinder exhausting... i.e., it is a single cylinder exhaust and a darn mushy one at that.

Reeves nut, you must still have some high temperature "sticking" of the governor spool in the rings. We had that same problem with the 32cc at Belgrade. In that sticking state, I pulled the sawyer's lever and thought that dam thing was going into orbit. It had so much in reserve, I thought it would flip over; and that was running compound only.

Jeff, I'll take the sound of a 110 Case on a belt over a cross compound any day, myself...too. But don't underestimate this old girl's abliltiy.

Although I only have two different factory scenes showing a 18-bottom Reeves steam lift plow, Reeves sold (or at least advertized) a 20-bottom steam lift plow to go with their engines and the 40 is the one that would have been sized for it. I don't know of any other engine company providing that, but I'm open to being corrected?
Gary

Reeves Nut,
Will the Smolik Brothers 40 Reeves and 110 Case still be sitting outside this coming weekend ( August 26-27)???? I am driving out to Iowa to visit with some friends and look at some engines on my way to Rollag and would like to see them.

Kevin,

Unfortunately we have cleaned up the engines and placed them into storage for the winter this past weekend. I believe (not 100% sure) that the museum is open from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. on the weekends if you wanted to look in the shed.

I would agree that the low pressure exhaust of a compound dosen't sound as neat or inpressive as the the exhaust from a single cylinder engine. I just love the low pitched roar that this thing makes under load because it so different from the others.

Gary,

I feel that we probably don't have all of the sticking out of the governor or it tweaked into perfection but I feel that we are at least headed in the right direction. There's always next year.

The muffled sound of the Reeves compound is the sound of efficiency! The sharp "bark" most seem so proud of on simple engines is caused by one thing, high pressure steam being released on the exhaust stroke.

That high pressure steam being released means wasted water and fuel. The compound engines use it again, and take more power out of it, resulting in a more muffled sound. The pressure is lower when released, thus more power was removed from it.

The bark sure gets ones attention though, and sounds like NASCAR!

Great video Reeves Nut, thanks for sending it.

Melvin

its too bad Reeves didn't prove there efficiency in the contests and things years ago. it sounds like the 40 likes water only pulling 144hp and 14 bottoms

I finally had a chance to download the videos and watch (and listen) 'em-I don't see how anyone could say that engine is nothing but AWESOME! Was it just me, or was that thing just hauling ass with all those plows like it had almost nothing behind it?

one thing to remember colin. the 110 only pulled 120 hp on the prony. the reeves pulled 144hp. does that tell you anything. i was standing right next to the prony on both tests and the reeves won hands down. so if you think your 110 would beat the 40 reeves bring it down and prove it.

what did the reeves win? it sounds like it was just a work out for these engines not a contest. ive heard people say that 110s pulled 150ish, and the 40 never has, so i guess the 110s still the winner?

Hey Colin!

Iowa is closer than Ohio to break your 110 out of retirement! Bring the old girl out & let us see how she does! Engine to engine, same place, same time!

Colin,

Some how, I think you missed the point here....same place, same field, same conditions.....plow & belt....I don't see where pulling 145 hp was in the equation.........I'll put my $100 up

Baker made a damn fine engine and I would put a good Baker up against any engine the same size.
