Default First steam up in Colorado ...

With the help of my father-in-law, we got the Groton out this weekend and steamed it up. The weather on Saturday was perfect ... Sunday was cold with sun, sleet and rain. It was the first time I have ever fired an engine with wood. We burned about 1/2 a cord of various types of wood from trees I cut down on my property. The engine ran great ... and as with all things steam, I have a list of new to-do items.

Thanks George!
Well worth seeing it run again. Rare engine like my Greyhound engine. Any more pictures?

I have been really busy, but I intend to update my website with additional pictures. Hopefully I will get them uploaded by this weekend.

Nice to see it under steam again, George! When is the next time?

I pulled the Port out yesterday & took it for a spin....such a fine feeling (and smell!)

Beth

My current plan is to steam up again on Labor Day weekend. This weekend was ideal because everything was green ... by Labor Day everything will be brown and and dry. So, I will probably need someone to be on "fire" watch to make sure that I don't burn the neighborhood down.

Hopefully you will have time to build a spark screen before your Labor Day firing.

I am more worried about the weeds dragging on the ash pan then sparks from the stack. This last run was the first time I fired with wood and I had no issues with sparks up the stack or anything that would cause a fire that way. I did find some tall grass caught between the draft door and the ash pan from backing up in the high weeds. I had to sell my 8N + brushhog before we moved to Colorado ... so I currently have no way to cut the weeds down.

I updated my website with the pictures from Saturday:

http://www.grotonengine.com/FirstCoSteamup.htm

There were no pictures from Sunday ... with rain, sleet and 50 degree temps, no one wanted to take any pictures.

I am planning to steam the engine over Labor Day weekend. Partially to honor the memory of great grandpa Rogers, and partially because I might have some time around then!
