Default Running 12 Volts Into 24 Volt Starter

I was looking at the starter someone put on a 4 hp Lister diesel engine
I bought last year with a gen on it belt driven

it's been on for years not sure how often it was used .the engine starts with the crank I was going to add a rubber disk to it to starter to start engines .it has a 12 spine shaft not common it seems for a 5/8 to 11/16 shaft
I happen to look at the tag today and saw it was 24 volts

looking a Pesco Products co it seems they were aircraft any idea what it would have been used on

would running it on 12 volts have done damage seems to run strong the few times I started it last year

In my opinion, 12 volts would not hurt it, unless starter could not roll engine and was held energized (locked rotor) for a time.

All other things being equal, it will merely run at ~1/2 speed. If that is still sufficient to start the engine, it ought to work well.

it would be better at half speed as the tag shows 4000

would the same battery drain faster than if it was a 12 volt starter
thanks

Battery drain (again, all things being equal) will be directly related to cranking speed.
