Default Cat D311 gen set, 1952 Canadian Military/NATO Cold War machine

This is basic Cat built genny being finish built and enclosed by Crothers Cat in Canada. Its 9' long, 33" wide, 64" tall. Shows 00625 hours and i believe it. Its not locked up as i turned the diesel thru using the pony flywheel by hand. Its previous owners after Canada were, U.S.Forest Service, Ohio DNR Forest Service. I purchased thru Government Service Auction. Was 50 cycle used in Canada?

You don't want that old, dirty, worn out thing. I'll come take it off your hands, as a favor...

Very nice find Mike. Could the extra pulley be for a really long front mounted recoil rope for the pony? Had you not said that it was stamped 1952, I was going to guess pre-WWII. Is the smaller generator belted off of the main AC generator a DC exciter for the generator?

Chris

its not for recoil, but for an aid somehow when rope starting the pony. never seen it in 20 years messing with these era cats. its got cat part number.

yes exciter is run off belt from main genny.... common cat thing back then. same on "Navy Gray Under Way".

thanks

Belt drive exciter is not uncommon for many generating systems, and it's not so much a 'cat' thing, as it is a 'whoever manufactured the generator', which is in this case... Louis Allis. Doing it that way provided a certain amount of flexiblity (in packaging inside a housing) that mounting it off the end bell of the main dynamo segment did not offer. Typically, it saves about two feet of overall length.

It's mobile! Easy to get in the shop and back to the barn when something just has to get done!

I like it! Lots of iron and copper for 20 KW... Intended to last many lifetimes!

Also, as you said, very mobile - especially if you have another Cat to pull it with...

Ya gotta love the military generators, compared to the garbage consumer stuff that people buy now days. I have a MEP-002a that I'm rather fond of - 5 military KW of onan iron...

Kevin
