Jeff; Thanks for the compliment. I know we talked about this before. If whatever the groove was to run it couldn't have used much power, being a round belt, possibly a water pump for auxiliary cooling tank. I have no data on the groove. On the old engines it ran either a fan or pump.

Hi Denis and to all others interested.

I own a 9 Hp. Tank Cooled engine with exact same tag as shown in post 133 by Don Worley and post 138 by Jeff Wahl. Odd thing about my engine is only the 9 Hp. is stamped on the tag. The other spaces are blank and I've not found any indications of a Serial number any where else on the engine.

I wish this engine could talk it sure must have had a bad accident in it's life. The engine doesn't seem to be worn hard, but the sideshaft side flywheel had the hub broke in about 8 places like if had fallen over on it's side. The other side of the engine has the crankshaft twisted off very nearly flush with the flywheel. The fellow I bought the engine from years ago said it was used in the oil fields in western Pa. and he ran the engine the way it was. The thing that surprised me the flywheels ran nice and true with all the damage. I had Kipp Maggert make a new flywheel using the old one for a pattern and will be fixing the crankshaft when I get around to it.

Are there any other of these engines that are stamped with serial number?

On my Jacobson the serial number is stamped on the end of the crank shaft. I don't know if this was a common practice or not on a Jacobson.

Can you confirm that the tag on your engine indicates that the engine was built in Titusville? Most Jacobsons were built in Warren. I would like to see a picture of your Jacobson's tag if you have one.

Attention to detail at Titusville was lacking. My factory records could list an engine sold with only the hp and purchaser on the bill. You are lucky to get a hp on the tag. They did a much better job listing serial no. for only parts. Most engines from Titusville were not stamped, just the tag. One way to tell an untagged engine that mostly holds true is that the spokes on the Titusville engines do not line up and are off about 5 degrees, Whereas the Warren engines line up. I have seen a few exceptions. If you look at my post #133 you can see that the spokes don't quite line up.

Here is another Titusville Jacobson and as Don said about the spokes they do not line up. Don possibly you can shed some information on post 142 the 2 1/2hp has a 4" bore and 21 1/2" flywheels and the 4hp has a 4 3/4" and 26 1/2" flywheels. my tank cooled has 21 1/2" flywheels and a 4 3/4" bore. No tag or serial #.

Hi Denis

I have attached some pictures of the nameplate on my engine as it now sets in my shop awaiting it's turn to get up and running. I took a tape measure and just have a rough size for the bore, looks like about 7-5/8 inches. Flywheels are 38 inches by 3-1/8 inches thick. I believe the remaining paint is from the factory.

I'm all ears if anybody can shed some light on this engine. See what I mean about the crankshaft being twisted off.
