This engine seems less refined, more primitive somehow, than either of those. The castings have a "prototype" level of finish. Rasp marks in the patterns etc.. I'm looking forward to learning more about this engine.

I didn't restart it after that. I see a leak around the valve cover and I want to make sure the cooling system is sorted before running it any more. Happy to get this far today.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question but are you using a belt sander to drive the flywheel for starting?

3" x 21" Dewalt. Endlessly powerful and variable speed. As a sander it's useless. The small front idler gives it an unsatiable appetite for belts. Perhaps it will redeem itself in this incarnation.

That is definitely the most unusual use for a belt sander. It sounds like you were able to get the air out of the fuel lines with enough cranking. It runs okay considering. I cant wait to see more of this. What an awesome, unusual engine!

The older gentleman is my uncle. He is 87 and I recently had to put him assisted living. The engine is sitting in his shop and eventually Iíll have to sell it.

Greg M. In the video linked to your post 12, where is all the smoke coming from? Not from the exhaust apparently. Is the engine breathing properly?
