I came across these pieces of equipment in the desert of central Arizona. I am trying to understand how the mine hoist operated. Wonder if it was an air hoist that could have been powered by the air compressor? Any thoughts appreciated.

One looks like a Fairbanks Morse N engine with a cable winch on the back of it, and the other one looks like a belt driven air compressor.

Thank you for the response. Your info gives me a place to start on the hoist engine. 1906 newspaper accounts of the mine note that a 25 hp gas engine and an air compressor were at the site.

The item with the winch, is definitely a gas engine - the pot muffler is still attached! Have a close look around - the missing parts may be on the ground nearby. Sometimes a metal detector comes in handy! do you know what was mined there?

Things haven't changed much since I stumbled upon this picture in June of 2015. Hot tube chimney is moved a bit.

Investors were mined. 1.7 million shares of worthless stock were sold in this mine from 1906 to 1908. In 2017 dollars that amounted to 4.7 million dollars. 4 of the promoters were sentenced to a year in Leavenworth. Two took off for Canada. One was pardoned. It is unknown what happened to the fourth......The mine was promoted as a gold time with ore averaging $200,000 per ton.....

Poking around elsewhere on Smokestak, I believe that the hoist pictured on the semi trailer is almost exactly the one in my photo.

From a 1908 catalog here is some information that might be of interest. Looks like that by counting some teeth on the gears you could determine the HP of the engine.
