Default Help with strange car with P&H Diesel

Hi,
we are doing an online only auction for a family in NE and have a 1950 Cadillac Sedan with a P&H 3 cylinder diesel engine. It has a P&H Emblem. I understand that this company did do some trucks for GM during this time frame and also heavy equipment. What can you guys tell me about this car? Farmer transplant? TRuck transplant? Cadillac had 2 gas motors for this year and doesn't list this as available according to the Encyclopedia of American Cars. Thanks-Yvette yvette@vanderbrinkauctions.com 605-201-7005.

I see four fuel injectors in the photo. I have seen a three cylinder P& H and it is a inline engine. Is there a name plate or any other indication of what it might be? AL

Yvette, the V4 P&H diesel that happens to be in that Cadillac was introduced in the early 1960s (my earliest literature on it is dated 1962). It was originally designed as a lightweight two cycle marine diesel, rated 135hp @ 2800rpm. Like most P&H diesels, with aluminum crankcases, they were subject to corrosion and cavitation around the cast iron cylinder liners, ultimately dumping coolant into the oil and destroying the engine. This engine is not to be confused with the more common and reliable Cerlist 4C which is also a V4 two cycle diesel. I am very curious about this car, what transmission was used and how it was adapted to automotive use. I would absolutely not attempt to start it without having an old time P&H mechanic/enthusiast look it over. That is a very hard to find engine now, as most were scrapped. Finding out whether it turns over with a wrench is enough information needed by any potential buyer.

If by some chance whoever bought this car is planning to scrap the P&H engine I would be more than interested in buying the engine to add to my collection. Thanks,

Chris

Zeb here, I ended up with the 1950 cadillac with the p&h. Unfortunately it is locked up. There is a tote in car with new liners and rings. Anyone have any clue how to rebuild and if parts are available? Or can direct me to someone with knowledge on this engine. i am located in panhandle of Nebraska, Ogallala is the town

You may be on your own, P&H is still in business but they won't even admit they ever built that engine...

Hi Zeb, welcome to smokstak! The engine in your car is very unusual, literature on it is scarce and I am sure every part that is needed for your engine will have to be made. I hope you have a machine shop or access to one. Out of curiosity, what is the bore on the liners that are in the tub on the seat? They look far too big for the engine that is in your car. They appear to be for the much larger 387, 487 or 687 diesels. I look forward to seeing more pictures of this engine and car as you work on it, it sure is an interesting combination. The P&H two cycle diesel caught my attention several years ago, I have some literature on these engines, but sadly in this day and age one can count every known running P&H on one hand.

Don't have time to dig right now, but believe I have a note re P&H Guru...
Also believe (if not confused with another engine) that problem with O-rings leaking can be averted by draining after use...sounds like more trouble than its worth but apparently saves unusual engines difficult to find parts for...
Will advise this PM...

Regret to advise I drew blank on any P&H Guru; concur the company tries to forget the engines...
There's been a fair amount of previous comments here; one of them may've mentioned a parts and/or advice source; you may have to search Pawling & Harnischfeger or just Harnischfeger to pick up all the Google references...
