Default Fuel Consumption

One of my customers just delivered his 100 steel hulled ferry boat from Honolulu to San Diego. It is powered by three 25 year old 3412 CATS. The voyage took 14 days to cover 2600 miles at 8 Knots. They ran all three engines at 1100 RPM and burned 6875 gallons of diesel. (20 GPH) Arrived with 2500 gal left in their tanks. Larger boats sometimes go back and forth from here on their own bottoms. The general rule is to carry enough fuel to complete your voyage and arrive with 1/3 left. They carried the extra fuel on deck in drums. AL

A clean bottom and propellers also helps reduce the resistance. By the way marine diesel here costs $3.00 a gallon. Do the math. AL

Yikes. Doesn't take long before the fuel costs more than the ship!

I would imagine that determining the most efficient speed is a complicated consideration of drag vs speed and engine efficiency vs rpm and load.

According to Boeing's website, a 747 burns 5 gal. of fuel per mile, which would be 13000 gal. for the same trip. But it does get there faster...
