Default Coolspring-Fourth Chance-10HP IHC TITAN Portable

The story goes like this. 1- I had some engines for sale and this came up in the conversation as trading material. I decided not to do the deal because of the distance so I let it go. 2- A friend got involved and wound up with the engine and had it hauled to Coolspring where it sat for several months. I knew he had it for sale, but being short on $'s I never said much about it. 3- Another person bought it and came to Coolspring to pick it up. After seeing it, he said he didn't want it . 4- I said to my friend, what can we do , and we did. The 1915, "EF", Titan, Tank Cooled, Throttle Governed, Portable Engine with a Webster magneto, weighing in at around 3,700 #s +/- and 49 1/2" flywheels is now in my collection . It needs some TLC as I call it for a few needed parts (which I think I have around), some adjustments, and cleaning. We oiled it up real good after sitting and not being run for some 30+/- years, put some gas in the mixer, cranked it a few times, the Webster fired the charge and it was off and running sounding good. We ran it a few times, and each time it got better. Before loading it on the trailer, a few of the "STACKERS" showed up, and after "MUDDY" introductions and some lively discussions we ran it again. I think Tom even got a video of it running (in the mud-DID I Say it was MUDDY, WET and COLD at Coolspring this fall).

As some no. I ended up with the engine and I put it on the block thinking there was something coming up in a auction soon that I would like to have. So I decided to let it go and when the man backed out of the deal I had it sold to boy did Paul's eyes light up. I could tell something was about to go down. Paul said we have to talk. I said we will chat on the way home don't worry. To many lookers at the engine sitting out in the rain and way to many lookers when we ran it. Paul just could'nt wait so under that green tent he went to pull those green backs out. It was like a kid in a candy store. But now for all this being said the story is not over. I am sure Paul will bring the post back alive when he lets Sandy the (wifey) no he just shelled out the $$$$$$$. Can't wait to here the end of the story.

Sandy just read over my shoulder my "word" document regarding the engine and didn't say anything except what do you want for supper . I guess that means all is still OK in NJ while I'm having fun on the way through .

Tom: Thanks for hanging around, taking, and posting the video. About all Kevin and I ate for two days was the soup for lunch and dinner. Kevin made up 5 gallons and it was all gone Friday afternoon with folks looking for more. It was a hit with the cold, damp weather. Now what to do for the summer show , surely not soup. Even with the lousy weather, we had a "GREAT" time meeting "STACKERS", friends, and a host of others from all over. That's what it's all about, having fun on the way through, even in NJ, Pa, Va, etc... With friends and acquaintances .

We didn't have room at Coolspring to bring it home, so it went south to a friend in Va. for pick up later. Not being in a rush, yesterday (Monday 10/26/2009) was the day to pick up the Titan with my son and good weather. We left around 10:15 in the morning and got home around 12:30 making the 580 mile + round trip having a good time. The GMC 4 x 4 1500 pulled the trailer easily, and we hardly knew it was connected. Got home and backed the rig in the back yard, closed the gate, said hi to the wife, and zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Woke up this morning and it was raining so I put up one of the old umbrella over it so I can fuss with it a bit to day. Here is a photo in the rain of the Titan on the trailer where the trip ended . I must say it looks "GOOD" . All is good and wet in NJ on the way through today.

She say's "EQUAL TIME" whatever that means . Anyway, pulled off the water pump. Got it apart and cleaned up. It was full of mud daubbers handiwork . The drain valve has a missing handle and valve lifter is also gone(both broken off and long gone). OH WELL... Took the fuel pump off, apart and cleaned. Just needs some brass check balls before assembly as the steel ones were a bit coroded. Also need to make a new 3/4" x 5 1/2" pump rod as its also a bit coroded and worn. Check the photos . Stopped at Fazios (steel supply) and picked up some flat stock, etc. needed. It rained all day here in NJ, but I still had fun...

Got busy for awhile(about an hour ) making chips after I found the 3/4" rod needed to make a fuel pump plunger for the Titan. Set up the mill and milled out the slot, turned the plunger 90 degrees and drilled out the pin hole. Attached is a fuzzy picture milling the slot and the second of the completed plunger. Now that the fuel pump is all together, I guess I'll go on to something else like the the magneto, bracket, igniter clean up .

I posted a separate thread.looking for a replacement for the broken throttle valve,

http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67893

but calls and emails to some folks resulted in ............... one positive response, send me the part and I'll make one for you. I want to tinker now. So what is one to do except be creative and make my own version. After some thought, why not like a throttle body valve on a Pontiac, except a lot bigger . Went to the heavy sheet metal parts drawer, pulled out a piece of 1/16". drew the outline, bent it over a 3/8" rod mandrell, located and drilled the mounting holes, trimmed it to shape (bigger than the outline) got the 4" grinder out and began the final shaping. After a few trial fits, some more grinding and beveling the edges I have a perfect fit. I'll secure the throttle plate with some some small round head machine screws and locktite, and I will be ready for more tinkering on the 10HP Titan. If this works out, I might send the original part out to be duplicated, or just put it in the 10HP Titan parts box .

Paul truely looking good. Just a couple of questions. Is it off the trailer and is the umbrella off the engine. The sun has been out in NJ.
Just busting my buddies chops on the way through.

Still on the trailer with the umbrella. I cleaned/repaired the mixer and put it back on the engine yesterday after I put the throttle valve in. Made a few adjustments and a new part for the throttle valve linkage. I'm working on the water pump (all apart/cleaned) and in the process of making the water pump drain unloader lever which was broken inside and the lever was missing . Need to address the "LOOSE" governor weights pivots, springs and a few other items. Might fuss with it again today as I have fun in NJ on the way through . HEY, it's not raining, and Corzine is "OUT" .

Dug around in the spare IHC parts pile and came up with these bolster pieces I needed. Just need about 2#'s of cast welding rod @ $36/# to fix it per the local welding shops. Checked with a couple of welders and got some ^$ quotes. I called a sandblaster/welder friend who said bring it over, and he can do it, and it won't cost much. So I did . Should be done in a day or so. Now to find the pivot that's around here someplace. Probably in a unmarked box. I know I have it . Didn't get much done today and it's dark already .

"The drain valve has a missing handle and valve lifter is also gone(both broken off and long gone)" I got the urge tonight and went in the shop and got busy. 1st. photo is what I had left and brass from the "brass box" to make what was missing. The second photo shows the work in progress, bored out the fitting a bit, machined the shaft with the shoulder, drilled a few holes and put in the offset lifter . The third photo shows the finished item after bending the lifter rod a bit to work properly, and ready to install . Making progress and having fun in NJ with the Yankeeys winning.

Spent some time having fun in NJ with the Titan today. Starts easily, and I'm working on slowing the "THROTTLER" down . No springs on the governor weights, throttle valve adjusted almost closed, timing retarded, crossover pipe from the exhaust to the mixer intake closed off, and got it to around 100rpm, but I want it a bit slower. She "BARKS" well and a slight adjustment of the exhaust valve rocker may quiet it down a bit. Still playing with it, and any suggestions on slowing this beast down would be appreciated .
