I have not received data/pictures of Jacobson engines for the registry in a couple of months now, until this morning when I got these from England.

With the return of nicer weather, perhaps now is the time to take pictures of your Jacobson and send them in for the registry.

Thanks!

Don, I see that there is Jacobson paint number on the top of the Skid Measurements drawing. That would help a lot of people. Regards from Geoff McCarten.

The numbers listed are for a maroon color. It was originally applied as a thin top coat. On most engines it has worn off. The numbers are all auto paint in acrylic enamel.

For those of you who are thinking of going to Coolspring this week, I am bringing my 2 1/2 hp Titusville type U sideshaft. Doug Sather is bringing his 3 1/2 hp Titusville SN 12697, and I am showing my 3 1/2 hp Warren engine SN 12696. Bring your Jakes to the show.

Consecutive numbered Jacobsons. The one on the skid is s.n. 12696 tagged Warren Pa., and the one on the cart is s.n. 12697 tagged Titusville Pa. Both are 3 1/2 hp. They were shown at Coolspring. There are videos of them running on other threads.

I do not know how this can be sorted out but I find it impossible to believe that Jacobson #12696 was built in Warren and that their next engine #12697 was built in Titusville, especially when we know that the move from Warren to Titusville was not a planned event, but a rushed event following the burning down of the Jacobson plant of Warren in March 1923.

I also suspect that no Jacobson engines were ever built in Titusville and engine production had more than likely ceased in Warren several years prior to 1923.

Jacobson had already built over 12,000 engines by 1917-1918 and they remained committed to provide parts for the engines already built even though their main field of manufacturing had shifted to other things, namely gears and transmissions. The Titusville operations probably consisted in making replacement parts for Jacobson engines built in Warren several years earlier.

Having said that, I do not doubt that Jacobson #12696 has a Warren tag and Jacobson #12697 has a Titusville tag because I have good clear pictures of both tags.

Here is a theory I have to possibly explain this situation (it is pure speculation on my part and could be completely wrong) but here it is:

Jacobson #12696 and Jacobson #12697 were built the same day in Warren in around 1917 or 1918. When Jacobson #12697 needed parts/repairs in 1923 or 1924, it ended up in Titusville. By then the engine could have lost its original Warren tag and from the serial number stamped on the end of the crankshaft a new tag was put on the engine with the Titusville location on it.

Hi Dennis, I have a question regarding some engine tag pictures on your Jacobson registry.
The tag with serial no. ending in 257 is definitely mine. The other tag ending in 271 IS my tag BUT with a different serial no.

No doubt they are both my tags but one is not my serial no.

interesting......

Hi Steve, here is the explanation:
You are right, both tags are pictures of your engine's tag. One is of the tag on your engine and the other one is for another engine which I had a real poor picture of so I used the picture of your tag as the background with the proper info for the other engine and voila.............2 nice tags for the 2 engines.

I thought maybe that was the case. Nice job!
Also if I have not already said it Thank you for organizing this registry, I have since been able to figure my engine is probably a 1916.

Hey Denis and Don,
First off I wanted to say thanks for making this thread into what a wealth of knowledge it is now. I have been following this thread for awhile now and as of last weekend I now have something to contribute. I picked up a 4-1/2hp Jacobson at a sale and have started to dig into it. I will get serial number and other info when I get home. For now here are a few pics. I am sure you will be hearing from me more as I am going to need some info on parts to put it back to original. Thanks again Jay

First is a pic of it at the sale. Second and third are when I got it home.

Ok, so here are my tags. Looks worse in the pics than it actually is but is still kinda crappy. Did or does anyone reproduce these? It is engine number 7053, size 5-1/4 x 7, and hp 4-1/2. The little tag selling Jacobson grease and oil is kinda neat. Thanks again Jay
