I also receive the UP steam news email. I've seen three of them and the magic is incredible. 4014 in Pomona, the one on display in Cheyenne and climbed all over the one in Green Bay.

I'll see 4014 somewhere this year and all of us gearheads shouldn't miss seeing 844 and 4014 together. To bring it into perspective, someone aptly described a bigboy as "1.2 million pounds of get the *uck out of my way".

We used to go to the Steam Town fall steam weekend in Bellows Falls, Vermont. I saw the Big Boy there which is now at Scranton, Pennsylvania. Also saw the one at Green Bay many years back.
On many trips "out west" I have stopped at Proctor, Minnesota to look over the big DM&IR engine which I believe is a 2-8-8-4. It is a massive beast as well!

I wonder what happened to the gentleman who was making a 7-1/2" scale model live steam UP Big-Boy? It was something like 18' long with tender.

When I knew him now (um) 40 years ago he had just had the frame flame-cut out of pieces of 1-1/2" steel plate. They were 12' long.

Big project. The engine would require a special trailer to carry it around.

I see others on Youtube have had this vision. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0JBhl79VJw

My late friend, Ted Young of East Peoria Illinois, built a live steam scale of UP Big Boy. It may have been about 5 inch gauge. He died almost 20 years ago. I wonder where that model is now.

I am driving from Denver to Omaha today. Hope to run into it somewhere between North Platte and Omaha. If so, I will take pictures.

Hello everyone,

I had a chance to take my family to see 4014 as she passed through Owatonna Mn on her way to the Union Depot in St Paul and then on to Duluth. We were at the Medford, Mn crossing with a clear shot to see her coming. That was amazing. I have the video Last of the Giants, a documentary on the history of Big Boy and in that video there is vintage footage of one of Big Boys blasting up Sherman Hill under load. In the video there is a young boy there with his grandfather waving to the passing locomotive and how I always wished I could have been that kid. Well, today that kid was me.

Best wishes to all

Gary Jones

They're supposed to have 4014 staged next to the DM&I 227. I would be keen on seeing some pictures of the two together. https://trn.trains.com/news/news-wir...uth-this-month

Thanks for th video. That is a really big steam locomotive. I have been in the cab of 844 and rode it from Longview to Texarkana. 4014 is a must see for me. I will catch up to it somewhere.

The comparison of these duplex locomotives leaves out the several triplexes having 24 driving wheels like Matt Shay Erie. They were used in the 1920s.

I'll hopefully see the large fellow twice. In Altoona WI and the next day as it rolls three miles away from my house for it's stop in Butler WI.

4014 is truly massive! The Rock Island E units look like toys.

The UP Big Boy Ted built was 3/4" scale and ran on 3 1/2" gauge track. I looked for some pictures of it but no luck. I saw it run for the first time at the Northern Illinois Steam Power show in early 1980's when a group had a track set up along a fence line for several years. Later that grew into the Prairie State Railroad Club. Ted sold the engine a few years before he passed to someone in New York state.
