Default Sattley 1 1/2hp

First off new to Hit and Miss engines. Have always loved them but just started on them.
Just got a Sattley (Montgomery wards) 1 1/2hp but getting it home found that someone had removed the mixer/carb or what ever and placed a piece of pipe in it. Looking for what to do or where to look for it, Not even sure what it is supposed to look like.
So if anyone has one of these and can give me some information on what it looks like, etc Assistance would be appreciated.

Also anyone know what the original color of these engines was.

Thanks

Thanks Todd,
Did not notice it when I got it, Right now I just pulled the WICO EK off, The arm that works it was frozen up with rust, (not oiled for a while), once got it fixed and back on it had enough to give me a shock, but not enough to cause a spark on the plug. So I pulled it back off and will be building a test setup I found on the web, to test it out. Also think it may not have been grounding good to the block. Will let you know how it goes.

Well had time in the shop today, Took the EK apart, Magnets are good and strong, but the bush is worn out, and to the point that one mag can pull out about 10 to 15 thou. before the other moves.
and the points are set to about 1/8 or more. Have not found what they should be set to for a Type 3 EK mag release. Thinking about posing the question in another thread.

Got some pictures of what you have? There were a couple of different builders of engines sold as Sattleys, but there's people here that can identify exactly which one you have so that you can match up the parts you need and what it is supposed to look like.

Wico EK magnetos are quite common on these engines. Parts to repair one and expertise for more advanced repairs like magnet charging can be had if required.

https://youtu.be/JhPJhR6ESHMOn the EK, the magnets are good and strong,
Points right now are set at about 1/8 inch, (seems to much)
Someone soldered a wire to the point adjustment screw and ran it to the case, The busing is worn bad to the point one side can move about 10 to 15 thou without lifting up the other side.
So I know I need point set, bushing, from things I have watch ShopdogSam, the coils seem to be ok, WHile in there should prob replace the Condenser as well.
Have a You tube of the Sattley feel free to look.

Thanks I will look there.
I finally found a WICO EK manual online that had the Type #3 in it. IT says the points need to be set at 3/32, Mine were well about that almost twice that.

Thanks I still need one, Got the WICO EK working last night, and got it going a little with the Rigg that a prior owner had put on it, but would not run properly, as the intake opening on it is only about the size of a large pea. Gas line is for a model Airplane, and the jet looks like it is from one as well.
PM sent.

Had it running for a few min, Wife took a short clip, but with what someone made for a mixer, and other problems it did not do good.
So it will be my first hit and miss project. After talking with a user, found it was also out of time, then looking at it closer, found that someone had also redone the push rod for the ignition and exhaust which may be causing part of the timing problem but think it is a few teeth off on the gears.

One of my first questions is this still has the pressed paper flat belt pully on it. Have taken the set screws out of it, but still cannot get it off.

Do not want to soak it with any type of penetrating fluid as that will ruin the pully, and from what one told me is they are few and far between any longer. So what is the best way to get it off, I have tried putting wedges between it and the flywheel, but it does not budge.
any assistance/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, started tear down on the Sattley, Got some pics from and measurements from another member. Found that my pushrod was at least 3/4 inch short, and at the last of it's adjustments. So I need to build a new one. Question what should I make it out of, was thinking something like O1 or W1 steel, or would just plain cold rolled steel be better. It is 3/8 dia with 3/8 x 16 threads on one end and the other goes against the exhaust tappet.
I also have to make a new pin for the Cam roller to looks like they did not oil it properly.

OK, Finally got back on the engine, The flywheel key was a bugger to get out, Found that some of the items are worn badly so will be looking for or making a few items. Problem is I am not sure what some of them are supposed to look like. IF anyone has a New Sattley and would like to send me some photos of some areas like the lockout paw, etc. I will be grateful

Also what is the best way to remove rust on parts like the rod and bock without affecting the bearing material. Would like to clean the rust up before I get to painting it.

Suggestions please

Sorry for the delay but have been out of commission for a while, have a short time before I am out again. Back surgery coming up. Finally got into the Sattley a bit more. All pulled apart some cleaning done. One flywheel is off and cleaned up a bit. Machined the face flat where it was torn up making it difficult getting the Gib key out.

The other one someone cut the key off even with the flywheel,
still working on getting it out key slot in front of it is messed up and I was wanting to fix it since I need to be able to put a pully back on it. Have drilled a hole in the gib key but still have to find a way to pull it out. Thinking slide hammer.

Here is a short on the one flywheel.

Well got some more work done on the Sattley The had had been welded and then ground with something. Put it in a lathe and surfaced the face so it would seal a bit better.

here is a video of some of it
