Looks like a pretty good deal. Even if you have to spend that much more to get the mag worked on.

I have one just like it. Paid $350 for it and mine was not as clean,
and it also has weak spark. It still starts and runs great though.

Ideal model R? Looks nice. Take out the spark plug and roll over to check the crank ball bearings. If it has a WICO EK, it probably wont need much to repair - sometimes just a magnet recharge will do. If the mag is missing, that's another story, then it gets expensive. The EK is easy to work on. One note - these engines run fast and tend to bounce a lot unless you have a good sized skid under them. They were not balanced well - they depended on the 600 pound mower they were mounted on to keep the bounce down!

I'd say start by making sure all parts move freely. Then lube anything that needs to be lubed. Then get some fuel in tank and make sure it gets to mixer. Make sure spark and exhaust valve are timed properly. Crank flywheels. Sit back and enjoy.

Are you able to visit with the seller? He may be able to help you better than any of us here since he is familiar with the engine. It looks like that engine has ball or roller bearings and a sealed crankcase. You should probably open it up. You will then be able to inspect it and clean it out. Make sure you have the appropriate amount of non detergent oil in the crankcase. As others have stated he want to make sure everything is well lubricated and moving freely. Are there any other collectors that you know of that are close to you that could assist?. Good luck.

The exhaust valve should close at TDC aftter the echaust stroke. The intake is atmospheric, so no timing there. On retard or start, the magneto should trip at TDC Compression. The mag should trip with an audible click, and open the poles evenly. If the pole shoe does not open evenly, you will get weak spark. Look at the bottom of the mag and you will see a movable piece of metal that bridges the poles on the core. It should snap open evenly. The fuel valve should be openned about 3/4 turn. Lift the pin sticking out the bottom of the mixer until gas flows out. Grasp the flywheels at the top, facing the rear of the engine and pull toward you. The engine should start within a turn or two. Once it starts, adjust the fuel so the engine does not smoke black, and you should be good. As I stated earlier, you want the engine on a heavy mount, as they tend to 'walk'. On the left side of the engine (mag side), there is a weight inside the flywheel that is the governor for the hit and miss system. Make sure it is not stuck.

Tes, SAE 30 oil in the oiler. If you have the engine running, and it tosses oil out thhe breather screen, it may have too much oil in the crankcase. There should be a drain at the rear of the engine, let some oil out now and then. With those small flywheels and the large bore and stroke, that engine needs to run fast to carry over to the next compression stroke. You cannot slow them down much.
