Default Google has patent searches!!!!

I just found out about Google patent searches for US patent records. It works great. I found 3 patents I was looking for in less than an hour. If you know the year it was patented enter that in the search with a description of the item that will help narrow it down and even better if you know the day it was patented.

Great find!!

I just tried "callahan governor" and came up with the drawings and text that I've seen before.

Will be interesting using this to look up other patents.

Thanks for finding this.

I saw this discussed on another site and was planning a post here. I am glad that Scott started this thread. The patent office has its own web site and search engine, but its usless to search the old patents. The govt site is USPTO.

Google is great, will search with a date, name, location or any combination of words. BUT, the problem I have is the documents on google are scanned in a low resolution and the pages print out like crap. or some please tell me if i am wrong, but the lettering is just a little too fuzzy for me and not worth the price of the ink. What I do is get the patent number from google and then go over to the uspto site and print from there.

The google search really makes the difference.

Once you have the patent # you can always go to USPTO.gov and get the real deal. If you are using a PC, you'll need a special image grabber available for free on www.alternatiff.com to load the images off the USPTO site. The problem was always searching the USPTO site only by class as all the other terms on the older patents were not available. The AlternaTiff plug-in allows high resolution images to be saved and printed. I am sure they (Google) have some sort of optical character recognition working to allow the search by keywords. ALSO- if you can, be sure to send an email to patent-support@google.com telling them you like it so it stays alive.

Hi......

Once you see the patent on the Google site there is a direct link just under the patent on the left side of the screen to the USPTO number search site where you can click on the "Images" button to see the patent if you have the plug-in viewer Paul mentioned. You don't even have to open up the patent office site.

Regards,
Larry Evans

If you click on the google advanced search you can narrow the years of your search also. I have a disc blade sharpener that was patented in April 1897 and found the patent right away.

Mine printed out really nice. I looked up all of the Associated patents and printed a copy for my records.

Try SMOKSTAK

It took over a year to run it through, but I managed it without an attorney.

If you find old engine patents, post a link here so we all can see them.

This Google patent search is GREAT!! I have a 1904 Globe engine with six patent dates on the name plate and I found all six and printed them out in about 45 minutes. I am using a H P laser printer for black and white and the quality of the printing is super. Now it's time to go and read this fascinating pile of paper.
