Default Scale Case Traction Engine on ebay

Hey guys, there is a scale case traction engine on eBay. It looks to be a three inch scale engine, judging by the size of the cart it is sitting on. the item number is 251821527748

The last biid that I seen was $3800. Looks to be made from castings, not home built. does anybody have any estimates on what this engine will sell for?

I see this morning that the case traction engine has 43 bids by 10 bidders and the price now is $5300.80 , but on closer examination this might be a two inch scale engine, the eBay seller has not added any dimensions, and it is very hard to figure out what scale engine this maybe. The cart looks to be made of two by twos for stringers and one by fours for the deck.
Has anyone on this site contacted the seller to find out what scale engine it is?

Hello gents, I contacted the owner of the traction engine that is on eBay And I have received some measurements of the engine. the engine is 62 inches long 26 inches wide and 36 inches high to the top of the stack. I hope this information is useful to someone out there that may be bidding on this engine.

It looks like it is well built and was used/working. It is going to need some TLC to put it in show condition. My Coles catalogs list 1' & 2" scale so I don't know who had the 3" scale. I bet it weighs over 200 lbs. I'm thinking that it may go to $8000. If you built one your time would be worth about $2 per hour! Ron

Well the countdown is on, less than 23 hours to go. I was contacted by the owner , who has Added more pictures to the listing. But I have still not seen any estimates on what you think it will sell for. I estimate it to sell for something in between 5800. and 6400.
any body else have any thoughts????

Aaron didn't make a 1/3 scale. It must be 3" or 1/4 scale.

Hi

I got one off Ebay several years ago that looked better than that one in the pictures and it turned out to be in very bad condition.

It took me a year to repair it so I could use it.

Here is a picture of me running it in the front yard.

thanks for posting the great vid of your traction engine,
what did you have to do to your engine to get it into running condition?
I recently purchased a one third scale case and have to do some refurbishing myself, nothing too serious, governor work and a little tinkering here and there. I will run the engine a few times and do a tear down and repaint This year.

Hi

The first thing I did was clean the fire box and smoke box out. Apparently the last time it was run they fired it on coal and the firebox was designed for wood. Whoever was operating it didn’t understand the difference and had put too much coal in and blocked the draft. The unit must have just been put in the barn and left for several years. The smoke box had a birds nest in it.

I Borescope the boiler and found the tubes and boiler shell had some deterioration but nothing serious. I could see the line on the inside where the water had been left but even this was not more than a few thousands deep.

The real problem was the cannon shaft was frozen and I had to remove it to even get the unit on the trailer I picked it up with.

Then I had to replace all feed water lines because they were all rotted out. The feed water pump was so corroded I finally added external check valves and replaced the piston rod.

Then the cleats that were on the bottom of the wheel were it sat came off because the rivets had corroded.

Unfortunately in the video I had forgotten to close the cylinder cocks other than that that was the first run of any duration and the finish of the repair project.

Hey Phil,
thanks for sharing your experiences.
I fired my engine last Sunday, One of the set screws in the governor had loosened off, and allowed the valve in the governor to be sucked downward into the governor body. I had to file a flat spot on the rod that controls the valve, in order to give the set screw more bite. a little trial and error to get the valve set right for proper operation , but once properly set the engine gave me no trouble at all. We were then able to let my girlfriend's 6 year old daughter run the engine around the yard,,,, smiles all around.. she says it's more fun than running our train. Big bird.
