Default Curved Boom Tow Truck Hoist Specs

Anyone out there with a vintage curved-boom tow truck hoist that would send me measurements?
I own a nice stock of heavy-Duty Angie iron, two power hammers, a shear/punch and various other appropriate tools.
I want to try to make one on my own. Not kidding.

Just Eye-Ball It

Get some sidewalk chalk and draw an arc on your garage floor, adjust as needed and make it whatever size is handy for you or whatever size it needs to be fit what you're putting it on.

I certainly thought about that. I have an old Weaver ad with some dimensions but not for a curved boom.
The angle iron I have is 3x4” and thick wall. So, that’s probably bigger and thicker than the stock materials, anyway.
The inside curve angle iron will be a real challenge. The material has to shrink.

They sure are rare!
Sure looks like a late 1930s IHC D-30 tow truck. Height of Art-Deco with a curved boom!
I’m especially interested in this photo because I own a nice D-30.

Cut your curved angle from flat plate .. then weld them up.

Glenn Ayers, the power hammer will cause angle iron to curve just fine in one direction, evidently, by stretching one leg of the steel.
Might not need to be heated, even.
However, shrinking one leg of extra heavy angle iron sounds really difficult. The cut-out plate idea is a good one.

You would drive yourself crazy trying to shrink one edge.

A guy can get pretty creative by plate cutting to make your angles. Each side could be one piece ... then build the edges into "Angles". That is .. of course .. IF you wanted "Custom".
Stock (original looking) curved angles would be awesome too. Then let people figger out how you curved angle iron ...

For some reason I like the series of gradually diminishing holes in the sides. But yes, great idea!

i had a tow truck hoist once upon a time, may even still have the paperwork that came with it new. it was not curved though and rotated 360 degrees. two winches one to elevate the boom and the other to draw in the hook. two handles for each winch a right and a left I guess so two men could power it. it was as strong as whoever was powering it, i picked up a early 1950's desota with it and they werent a light car!

Some years back, I had a friend that was in the scrap cars business. He had no money for a real tow truck, so we built a reasonable replica. Made the sub frame and booms out of channel iron and heavy pipe and angle irons. But when it came to the winch, there we came into issues as those were expensive. He found a old beat up winch from some junk pile, but you need a two way pto to operate it. Those were even harder to find so we rigged up a old car trans in the drive to get forward and reverse rotation for the winch drive. Clumsey, but it served for years till he passed away several years back. Every time he found a better truck chassis to up grade to we transferred the home made rig over. And each timed he would dress it up a bit, but that drive line remained, as he was used to it! One fellow who also made up his rig, used one of those electric operated little winches. It was too little for big loads but with an extra pulley it got by. Those electric winches were relatively unheard of back then, today a good sized one can be had from Harbor Freight for a very reasonable price.

There is a vintage wrecker group on Facebook. Might get some input there.
