Its happening!

Last night, at nearly midnight eastern, Big Boy 4014 was seen moving out of the shops and into the yard at Cheyenne. Moving on its own steam, the only engine of its class to have done so in 60 years.

Thanks for posting. I don't do FB.

Wow! Hail to the chief.

The UP must be super confident about their abilities. Most likely there probably won't be any major issue with 4014 on the trip this weekend May 4th.

Am currently watching a Trains Magazine live stream. They are trackside in Cheyenne not far from the steam shops, and are currently awaiting the 4014's first test run.

Have heard that the crew is currently on the engine checking over its details one more time.

I really wish the Challenger was operational. The two of them rolling into Ogden together would be one hell of an awesome site!

The KING has returned. As of a few minutes ago, UP 4014 running from Cheyenne to Greely with a short consist while they get everything adjusted. For a freshly rebuilt engine it sounded like it still had a bit of rod knock, I'm guessing they haven't drawn up the big end boxes all the way since they want it to run in a little.

Edit: They went a few miles, and a piston rod packing started blowing by. So there's still things to be fixed.

UP 3985 needs much of the same repairs that were given to 4014, to the extent that while making parts for 4014 they made a duplicate set of those shared between the Big Boy and the Challenger. Once 4014 is running well and ready to go on tour with 844, they'll bring 3985 into the shop to be overhauled too.

Now I have heard in conversation that the UP steam program is limited to 2 running engines at any given time. So if that's the case they can only rebuild 3985 up to putting flues in and hydrotesting, because at that point the FRA 1472 starts counting from. If what I heard is true they won't finish 3985's boiler with flues and tests until 844's flue time expires, having been last done a couple of years ago.

I've heard the same about when the challenger will be brought in. Lets not forget that the steam crew still has to finish 4014's tender conversion work.

If the latter is indeed true? That sux! Several of us were hoping for a triple header!

Wow, I didn't realize that 3985 was laid up. I sure am glad I got to see it when I did! It was a long time ago, trackside on Cajon Pass.

I distinctly recall the heat radiating off of it as it went by, grinding it's way up the hill. Thunderous!

I think I finally figured out what is bothering me so much about all these Big Boy videos. I think it is the 844 trailing 4014. I want to see 4014 working on his own.

It would be neat to see BB pulling something that will make it grunt up to the ability of it's single burner. And not just a few diesels in dynamic.

You have to keep in mind that this event is a traveling road show for Public Relations, not a revenue generating road engine. The infrastructure to keep steam serviced at regular intervals no longer exists. The money invested in this fleet is good advertising for the company, More good will generated for the company than money spent in traditional advertising. And it works!
