Default Need operating instructions for Deming New Marvel water pump

I just got an old Deming New Marvel pump; see http://www.oldengine.org/members/inz...demingpump.jpg

I want to belt it up to my hit and miss engine. I have never seen a pump like this in use before and have some questions about it- what's the tire valve stem for (for priming or stopping it from pumping??), and how to lubricate pump piston (is there leather on it?). Any info on this pump would be helpful.

Thanks,
Rick I.

Rick,
I have one also, looks like yours may be older.
If you get any information could you forward me a copy?
The one I have is tight and won't turn.
I have filled the pump end with motor oil, a little breakfree, and marvel mistery oil and have just let it sit.
Haven't touched it in a month since.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am new to the forum but have an extensive library of Deming catalogs and maintenance manuals. If you are still interested, I also know of an old well/pump guy near Akron OH that has parts for this style pump.

Let me know and I will scan and upload pages from the manuals if desired.

I sure could use some help! I hope to start work on it this summer, and still have the same questions: what's the tire valve stem for (for priming or stopping it from pumping??), how to lubricate pump piston (is there leather on it?). Any info on the New Marvel at my link above would be helpful.

Thanks,
Rick

Did you ever get any help for the Demming Marvel pump? I have a shallow well Marvelette (circa 1941) and need parts. Do you know anyone who I can talk with? 412-527-9045 Dave

I have Deming Pump Cat #33 (1940 copyright) with both the Marvelette and Marvel Info and can send or email copies. Email me via Smokstak. I have no idea where you can get parts.

"what's the tire valve stem for "
It is used to purge air out of the water chamber of the pump.
Remove valve cap, press down on the valve stem until just water comes out, as the pump is turning or pumping. Replace cap.

Nope, nobody ever responded. I still haven't gotten a round tuit and my pump looks just like the photo 8(!) years ago.

Also, thanks Shane, for the explanation of what the mystery valve if for! ...So that chamber fills full of water, or only partially full? (I thought it held at least some air to smooth out the flow of water from the pipe.)

The Pump chamber is a small water reservoir & doesn't have air in it.
Generally, the pump is connected to a water storage tank. The water storage tank usually had a pressure switch on it to turn off / on the pump motor, at a preset pressure. The tank used air to cushion the water pressure from banging in pipes, tank etc. In some cases the tank was about 50 / 50 air water. Air pressure was set in the tank at around 40 to 60 pounds. Then water pump would be turned on, & automatically turn on / off there after.
Today, water storage tanks have air bladders, inside the tank.
On the end of the supply or suction side of the pump is a foot valve to stop water from going back into the suction line & draining the system.
Piston pumps need to displace a liquid in order to create a suction in the suction side of the pump. So piston pumps need to be primed with water as the pump is in motion. I would think an internet search should find most needed information.

I would love to have an exploded diagram of the Deming pump or any other types of similar info. I’m new to smokestack, so let me know what I can do to facilitate.
Thanks,
Robert
