This tractor is referred to only as the "Farm Motor" in literatureI have, but it later evolved into the 25-50 model. If someone has a scan of the 25-50 that they could post, that would be great.

Hi

Very nice pictures!
One thing: are you sure you didn't mix up the 40-80 and 35-70?
The reinforcement going to the front axle in your pictures on the 35-70 is flat and on the 40-80 it's down like most of the MTM's.
We have a 35-70 which originally was a 40-80 which has the reinforcement flat. Since it is broken on ours I think that it were the earlier ones that had it flat.

I'm sure I didn't mix them up, but that doesn't mean the images are 100% correct in the first place.

The reinforcement looks the same on our 40-80, which was bought new in 1918, #1299 as in the drawing.

It's just strange that all the 35-70's and all the 40-80's we've seen have the reinforcement like that. Execpt for the 35-70's that are re-rated 40-80's with an R in front of the serial number.

They may have only used that type of reinforcement for a short time as I have also seen remanufactured 40-80s with the angled reinforcement.

It definitely wasn't good construction. Ours is broken.
I think that the first ones were like ours because a 25-50 has it flat as well. Maybe the ad of the 35-70 is a remanufactured one

At Jeff Jacobsen's website http://tractorhorn.tripod.com/ there is an even earlier one that also has the diagonal bracing.



This is the tractor that turned into the 25-50, and it also has diagonal bracing.

What is your tractors SN?

About the only change in them seems to be the rating on the serial number plate after the Nebraska tests.

Where is the governor located? In the cab, or on the engine?

Your S/N is 10 before the Nebraska tractor, #1647. Interesting that it was remanufactured.

The governer is on top of the engine. Never saw one with it inside te cab
I think the moment they were remanufactured they got a new number?

Ours has the governor in the cab, directly above the carburetor.
As far as I know, the R was just stamped on the existing tag. I know of one with SN R612, which means it would have to be the original S/N as it has OHVs.

R is cast on the plate, as is the number. The plate with the number is a loose piece of the plate with the type on it. Kinda like the ones on the 17-30's

Here is a picture of 35-70 R 1041 Serial Tag. This tractor used to be in the Ohio Area years ago. Mr. Stucky I believe. It came from the Twin City area when he bought it. Would be nice to see if someone had pictures of it in its work clothes.

I see that Pickering does not have the automatic shut down feature that most Pickerings of that type do.
That's one tractor you don't walk away from when it's running.......

If you look closely, it apears all the straight angle brackets are on the road tractors where the motor ran counter-Clockwise or up if you were standing in front of it.
Also while researching in the Minnesota History Museum. I found a parts book that said tractors prior to 1917 had a chain driven water pump. All tractors after this had a belt driven water pump. Was probably also the same time the radiator was flipped around.
