Default Briggs & Stratton ybsxs.5012vp manual?

Hi everyone, I got yet another project today. Picked up a Murray riding mower. No deck and the engine is missing everything that could be unbolted pretty much. The block is intact minus a rocker arm and nut. The flywheel, mag, carb, and starter are gone.

I'm looking for manuals for a B&S ybsxs.5012vp 16hp engine??? I want to see if the engine is worth rebuilding or if I am better off just finding another engine along with the 42 inch deck?

If nothing else the frame my end up becoming something else entirely.

Robert

Had you asked about six months ago I would have given you the one I had. Another fellow on smokstak needed parts for one, so I just mailed him an entire engine. I found one at the curb much like you did, missing too many parts to put it back together. He needed a good cylinder, so away it went. I was happy to not trip over it. In my opinion those engines are not worth investing anything into. They were cheap when new and performed like a cheap engine. You are better off selling what is left of your engine and putting a better engine in its place. Just make sure that engine is not a Kohler Courage, or you will going ten steps backwards!

Chris, Darn it! Day late.

What would be a good engine to look for? What models of Briggs 16 or 17HP are considered good engines in this day and age? I've never messed with riding mowers much. Always liked my little push mowers.

I'll second that! Somewhere on the stak I posted about replacing a low time Courage short block as the block cracked about 90% around the cylinder base. As a vertical crank I bet if I stood on the cylinder I could have broken the whole thing in half. That cost the guy around $750.

Im not sure what the drivetrain is of that tractor, but you could try finding an Onan Performer or a Kohler Command. Both built twin cylinder engines in the 16-20hp range. Briggs & Statton also made a fairly good horizontally opposed twin cylinder engine in this range, but make sure it is an I/C. These engines used to be thrown out at the curb quite often, but the scrap guys are so vicious around here the chance of finding one is slim. Alot of the big horsepower (14+) single cylinder vertical shaft engines hammered so hard they destroyed themselves. If you wanted a new engine, I hate to say it because I do not fancy anything imported, but Kawasaki supposedly makes one of the best vertical shaft air cooled mower engines, and has for the last 10-15 years.

Chris, The scrappers are worse than turkey vultures around my parts as well. I'm partial to Briggs engines so would like to stay with a Briggs engine. The engine that is on the tractor is a single cylinder engine. Engine appears to have no cracks and has compression.

Briggs

Family YBSXS.5012VP 274826

Model 31C707 Type 0175E1 Code 030124ZD

I'm guessing this parts list would fit this engine? https://www.briggsandstratton.com/na...RL_LO.pdf.html

"Picked up a Murray riding mower. No deck and the engine is missing everything"

What you have is a heavy duty doorstop. Do not waste your time on the engine, do not waste your time on the frame. If it has good tires you might be able to make a portable BBQ grill.

just being practical. You can get a whole running mower, cheaper and easier than trying to patch up what you have. Everything that was any good has been stripped off.

And, no I did not accept Murray mowers for repair in my shop, there was no end to fixing them. Typical problem was belt/blade work. The spindle assy was shot, the deck was rusted through where the spindle bolted on. The Idler pulleys were shot, the bracket that held the pulley bent, the lever that engaged the bracket was worn out, etc, etc. And sorry, I can't put your NAPA belt on it and guarantee my work. You have to know when to walk away.

I understand, I was actually thinking of having it hauled off for scrap. Although the frame intrigues me as a base for a 10 2.5 inch gauge locomotive build. Stripped down without all the mower crap attached it would be a base for building a shunter like this one. https://www.trovestar.com/images/Col..._124214_19.jpg

6HP Honda clone and a old Alt running two 24v winch motors as traction motors. Simply electrical system similar to http://www.smex.net.au/reference/Alt...Traction02.php

Find a cheap source for flat steel about 1/4 thick press it into some 2x2 ties and have a crude RR. Crude track of similar design seems to handle a Bigboy just fine in New Zealand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C48pU2_KePg
