Default 1939 Minneapolis Moline UTU

Been getting other projects done in shop so almost ready to tackle my very rough 39 utu. The kec engine was taken apart 30+ years ago outside and left until I bought it. I have a decent kef motor out of a 41 and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I could swap the internal parts from the kef into the kec crankcase that way I can keep all my serial numbers correct for the 39? I don't have any extra good kec parts right now and the 39 needs crank, cam, rods and pistons. Any help is greatly appreciated guys

Kec and Kef crankcases aren't the same as well as rods and lifters. Remember KEC has babbitted roods and mains.Kec is precision bearings. MM offered exchange crankcases in early forties where a person could swap out his babbitted crankcase for an improved Kef one.

Will the Pistons on kef kec interchange? I have both utu's and both stuck. Looking to possibly do a cheap build if I can stir them together.

All U's used same piston just different rod for babbitted shells. Kta also uses same.

My main problem is the crankshaft is junk in the 39 and I was wondering if anybody had a kec motor for parts or if I could put kef crank in my crankcase? Thanks for the info gb.

Crank for KEC KE401 and for KEF KE401B. Wouldn't all journals be wider for babbit?

That's what I don't know but I was thinking if I changed everything crank, and rods if it would work? I'm just looking for ideas before I get into it

Checked last night and journals are different diameter. KEC is smaller.

Follow up. Crankcase is different as well as rear main. Crank gear has 35 teeth on KEC and 38 on KEF. Be much easier to find a KEC crank. Either get original crank done or get one out of a KTA or a wrecked UDLX!

Hello everyone! First time on this or any other blog so bare with me. I'm looking for help finding out what engine is in my 1939 MM UTU? I read in here about KEC and KEF engines? How can I tell them apart to hunt for the correct tech manuals? Is there a separate data plate on the engine? Any info would be great and thank you in advance for the info

Sure it is a 1939 UTU? Not many made. If it is will be a KEC motor with babbited bearings. 1940 the Kef motor came out with precision bearings, Two serial numbers. One on motor and one on transmission housing. Post and will be able to identify.
