Smile 1986 Ford 250 4.9l

Just picked up F250, It spent most of it's live on a air force base, It has a hydraulic lift on the back that works good. I did some work to her it was back firing, change plugs, tightened the carb, valve cover gasket, air filter and oil change ( rotella 15-40 ). Now she runs smooth, had at least three of these engines before never had a problem with them. (knock on wood ).

Never seen a 4.9 go bad. Body always went first.

Put some Locktite on those carb fasteners, else you will be back there about every 3rd oil change. Those are good engines, I have probably put 400K miles on various similar trucks.

just a few years newer they went with dual exhaust manifolds and multi port fuel injection, talk about waking up a sleeping beast! i am like every one else, never seen one go bad. the rest of the truck will fall apart before the motor goes. on a side note, doors that body style are damn near impossible to source should you need one.

I’m a veteran of working on these in the shop environment. My main complaint about the 4.9l is its weirdness. Weirdness translates to parts availability problems. I see 10 or more 5.0L/ 5.8l v-8s to one 4.9l 6 cylinder. Also, I’m not a fan of their multiple timing mark scheme. Very confusing.
I’ve done intake manifold gaskets on them so I know they go out.
Otherwise, good engine.

My 84 one ton had that motor. you will learn how to tighten the carb up. BTDT many times. lock tight would probably work if you pulled it apart to clean it all up.
