Default lausonsmallengines.org website being retired

Folks

I just got a renewal notice from my web hosting provider for $500. Not gonna happen and I'm tired of playing the game with these guys come renewal time. I'm going to let the hosting expire which will happen early April, 2019, which means the lausonsmallengines.org website will no longer be available.

I've been keeping this open and available as a convenience for Lauson enthusiasts for a while now but I think it's time to pull the plug.

Thanks

I'm sorry to hear this Craig, I really enjoy your website and go to it first to inquire about any Lauson questions I have. But I understand, $500 is stupid for a private website. You can buy some nice engines with that!!

I own the address but they have it locked down so I can't transfer it. I could choose another domain somewhere else (as I have done in the past) but I'm just tired of the shenanigans.

Generally, the hosting hardware provider isn't the one you want for domain name registration in case you want to move.

It appears that publicdomainregistry.com is your domain registrar and www.e27.ehosts.com is your hardware provider.

HERE'S THE ANSWER:
eHost is closed for business www.ehost.com/
eHost closed for business. Sorry we've closed our doors, but if you were an existing customer, we've migrated you to one of our other brands, please see below.

CONTACT www.publicdomainregistry.com to see how you can move to a new hardware provider.

FWIW: If site isn't too big, there is a free open source program called "HTTRACK" available that is specifically aimed at duplicating entire websites and saving them in html form. I suggested it to the new admins over on machine builders network and they snagged the entire site rather than losing it when current hosting vanished.

(Short story: Matt Kramer, former owner/admin suddenly died about 14 months ago without leaving any admin log in info, even with family. It wasn't even known Matt had passed away... just that the site wasn't being maintained. Eventually we got it figured out. Some members negotiated with family to take over site, but without login or password info it was basically start from scratch again until I suggested HTTRACK.)

Anyway, if site is small might be worth giving HTTrack a shot.

I have a shout out for HtTrack, it works very well. I hadn't used it in at least 10 years and yesterday's download works very well. Yes, it will mirror a website to your hard drive. It will only grab files on the same server so you don't have to worry about mirroring the entire Internet to your PC by accident. The local copy performs faster than the Internet original. I believe with the proper browser security settings it could run the copied web site from a CD/DVD, however that is getting harder to accomplish with every browser security update.

I grabbed my favorite web site last night, 1.5gb and 41,000 files in about 17 hours. I have not detected any errors in the copy yet.

There were some comments about Eldon's web site and making sure it was archived. I have not tried it with HtTrack but it might work fine.

I only have a couple Lausons and the fact there is a website for that particular engine has been a good thing to know if I want to refurb those engines. It is a shame if that info is lost completely.I hope someone can find a way to salvage the hard work and the info put into it.

Craig,I saw your display at Silk hope a couple years back and you do a good job on those engines and set up a nice exhibit.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Offloading the site isn't the problem. I have a backup copy local on my home PC and on a Zip drive.

The problem is finding an affordable hosting site.

I was looking at google sites for instance that is free hosting, but they have their own site development software so I would need to recreate the site page by page using their software. Too much work, especially when I have the site here locally and could just upload it to a new host that supports file transfer as I've done twice now in the past.

Craig,
I am sorry to learn that your site is going down. I will have to send you an email so we can keep in touch about Lauson "happenings". Is yours unchanged from when we last emailed one another?

I check Smokstak during lunch-hour (while at work) more frequently than I check the home email, these days.

Hi Mac

Good to hear from you. You're really, the original 'Lauson' guy. My email hasn't changed, you should have it. It's also published on the web site for as long as it's up.

When I get some uninterrupted time, I can go through the site page by page and back it up on the Wayback Machine website.

EDIT: It appears that the entire website has already been archived, and can be found right HERE.

I tried your link. I got the lauson home page, but when I tried to access a further page, I got a statement that that page has not been archived and was available on the web. I also tried to set up an account so I could access some other sites, but their verification check repeatedly failed. Has anyone actually been able to access any sites?

That is strange because I just went through the entire site on the Wayback Machine and it all shows for me.
