Default John Deere Rectifier Diode Size?

I have an older JD 111 that used a diode to rectify the alternator output to 12 volt. The dealer wants over $10 for one. Does anyone know the size so I can afford to buy a couple of them to keep on hand. They always seem to break and get toasty before I have a chance to examine them.

Actually $10 is about right for an aftermarket diode assembly (Stens, Rotary, etc.) OEM Briggs part (393814) is priced about $15.

OEM diode is 3 amp and 50v PIV. I would replace with 6 amp 50v PIV. Since you have electric clutch might even consider 10 amp, since they draw a lot of current. Price should be about $1 to $3 each.

Make sure you get polarity correct if you are doing a Frankenstein with a commercial diode. Assume you have soldering skills and heat gun to shrink tubing over the parts.

The B & S 393814 is a wire and diode assy and one I saw was $9.00 They also sell just the diode 391507 but the first one I saw of those was $14.00! You can also buy the wire assy that plugs into the 393814 but I don't remember that number off hand.

When they quit working I dig down to them and they are broken in two. I am trying to get some reliability out of them. Any suggestions? I can solder and the only other question is which way to mount the diode.

Go to 10 amp 200 piv and barring a wiring short, you should not have to replace again in your lifetime.
