Do we need Primer on Bare Cast Iron?

I have ben debating weather to use urethane or epoxy primer on a hit and miss engine. The urethane is a high build and both have to be sanded before painting. How do you sand all the areas on a engine. or is there a different type of primer that doesn't require sanding?
