If you have a caliper you can measure how thick your original gaskets are. I am not sure which gasket you are referring to on your 55. There are not many gaskets to begin with, their is a head gasket, ignition timing plate gasket and carburetor gasket. I do not think there are any others. I have two 55s but have never worked on them. The original gaskets might have been paper, fiber or asbestos. If you are concerned about the timing plate gasket, you should be. Too thick of a gasket and your crankshaft end play can become excessive. I make most of the gaskets for my old engines by matching thicknesses to the appropriate, paper/mylar/fiber or composite gasket material.
