Default Twin City 17-28...My Intiation into the Twin Cam Faternity!

I purchased this Twin City 17-28 last November. When I looked at it in the shed there were 4 frozen McCormicks and Farmalls parked in the way so I left the check with the verbal agreement that I would come and get it after the weather warmed up the following spring. Got the opportunity to haul it home yesterday.

The tractor seems to be in good condition but hasn't run for a few years. I see a few minor repairs that need to be done and will complete these before I try to start it. This will be the first twin cam I've worked on so will be asking advice from those who have been there. I want to set it up for plowing by this fall if possible.

Nice find! We had better run the serial number on this machine because if it is actually a 17-28, it is an early one. I see lots of early components here that all point to 1926...Many small changes were made in 1927.
Pull the valve covers and generously oil the top end prior to start up. After you have all valves free and oiled, do the rockers and squirt oil on the pushrods until it runs down to the lifters and floods the lifters and cam lobes with new oil.
This will help to avoid a dry start up from sitting.
You must also prime the external oil pump and observe a working gauge when engine is started.
You may want to pull the oil filter screen from the pan and dredge the old black thick goo from pan bottom if it is accumulated there. Make sure the oil filter screen is in good shape. If the screen is coming apart from years of
deterioration pieces of it may get drawn into the oil pump gears!

Here is the serial# tag...also a very closely related number off the motor block. I presume at one time these were supposed to match? There isn't any model designation stamped on the tag and the "17-28" is only painted on....there are no numbers on the lower radiator casting.

The previous owner warned me against hand cranking the tractor to start it as sometimes it would kick back. He pull started it. A quick check of the magneto drive shows a lot of slop both in the shaft coupler behind the timing cover and the mag drive coupler itself. The distance between the white paint marks is the total backlash I'm dealing with. It appears the mag timing has been bouncing around quite a bit.

So while I'm musing on what to do in the ignition department I'll be starting the"Thompson Twin Cam Pre-trip" as time permits.

I've got a couple with the 17-28 painted on. I don't think the engine numbers and tractor numbers ever matched. They did get close for a while. I have # 20763 with engine number 20707, and have it dated as 1926.
The closest to matching is on my 12-20. Serial # is 15058 with engine #15051-- only seven numbers apart.

Welcome to the "TC Fraternity". They are very interesting tractors.

I got a chance to drain the engine oil and removed the oil suction strainer. It is in very bad condition and just as Tony implied there is a layer of hardened black crud on the bottom of the oil pan. Hopefully I can remove it by working through the hand holes on the RT side.
Suggestions ? Any problems replacing the screen with a hydraulic tank suction strainer?

There is no oil pressure gauge per se on this tractor...only a plunger apparatus that apparently extends when the motor is running. Is this the normal set up?

Mark,
The screen should have a coil spring inside to prevent suction from flattening it out. Count the screens holes per square inch to get one that compares.
The pop up gauge appeared often from 1926 through 1928. I would use an oil gauge long enough to get your adjustable external oil pump set at 18-20 pounds.
If you look up my 27-44 resto I have detailed what you are dealing with in great detail with good photos.

Took a look in the parts book and the plunger type oil gauge, part number TW2451 was used on the small twin cams from serial number 18767 to 22809. Before and after that they used a dial type gauge.

For the last 3 years there has been a little informal plowing demonstration associated with the Duckfest activities at Bowdon ND during the second weekend in October. Having a plowing day this late in the year hasn't worked out too well weather wise. The local tractor guys got together and suggested that it would be better in warmer weather. Tentative dates are Sept 11 & 12 at the City Park in Bowdon. There is no such thing as an admission charge. We only ask 2 things....spend some of your money in town and refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages while operating equipment. Junkfest in Carrington is on Sat. the 12th which gives the ladies who find tractor activities boring something to do. For more info send me a PM.
I've been using an early Oliver 77 (cultivator lift model) and a IH #8 2-14 plow. This year I wanted something older so bought this Twin City and am hoping to have it ready in time. Haven't got a 3 bottom plow located yet.

I got rained out of my lawn mowing job yesterday so had some time to work on the Twin City. I removed the water pump/mag drive shaft and found that part of the excess shaft backlash problem was a badly worn key in the front coupler assembly. The rest of the excess slack is in the mag drive coupling itself. The drive tangs measure .215" wide and the slots in the disc measure .300". I assume that the drive tangs were originally 1/4" wide. I'll have to think of a way to tighten things up here.
I'm not an expert on magnetos but this is the first time I've seen a four cylinder mag with 5 thumb screws on the cap. What's the center thumb screw for?

Thought it was time for a progress report (or lack there of ). After giving some thought as to why the oil pump screen ruptured the way it did I came to this conclusion. The suction screen must of been plugged and the vacuum created by the oil starved oil pump caused the screen/spring assembly to wrinkle together like an accordion. This action repeated over a length of time caused the screen material to fail. Thankfully the failure came before the crankshaft bearings burned out. The oiling system on these motors have a real shortcoming by not supplying some kind of a bypass circuit to insure the oil pump gets a supply of oil.....screened or not.
When I viewed the crankcase innards through the hand holes I could see the cause of the screen plugging problem. The crankcase had a generous coating of carbonized oil deposits that can only come by decades of running non-detergent oil. The last few oil changes must have been detergent oil installed because the carbonized layer was coming loose and the crankcase and oil pan were full of these small chunks.
Since the engine had fairly good compression I did not want to tear the engine down to clean things up. I wouldn't have the time for a project of that size during the summer anyway. I got the opportunity today to drag the tractor out of the shop and over to the pressure washer. I soaked things down with diesel fuel and then spent an hour of so blowing the crud out of the motor. Not a perfect job but was able to remove a vast majority of the problem.

Some DU 4 Bosch magnetos used in pairs had the 5th thumb screw and that was to bring the current from the rear of the maggie at the collector post to the distributor cap, if you look at the other end you should see that there is a terminal on the collector tower to which the wire leed is connected to. on these mags there should not be a spring loaded spark transfer through to the distributor cap

When you mentioned dual magnetos would this be on engines that have dual ignitions like aircraft and some firetruck engines and the like? If so is it possible the center thumb screw may have had a grounding wire attached to perform the magneto checks on these applications to make sure both mags were firing?

Mark this may well be so as sometimes the Dual Mags have the carbon transfer rod from the accumulator post through to the distributor cap as well as the 5th terminal, which would make the possibility of a grounding switch very likely.

I could tell I had some wear problems in the governor area. The bushings in the back of the die-cast governor housing was loose enough to allow the yoke on the governor arm to separate from the T rod below it. Worst of all the bushing bore in the housing is egged out in the back and has a piece broke out of it. Disassembly of the governor showed that governor weights had been rubbing inside the governor housing. Most of the pieces need some kind of attention.
I wanted to check the wear on the governor shaft bushing that is pressed in behind the drive gear but discovered the shaft can only be removed from the engine after the radiator is removed. This would mean unbolting the radiator core from the front tractor frame. I decided to leave it as it was.

Did some tractor hunting over the weekend. 2 later 17-28's with no tags and a 1930 FT....all in pretty tough shape.
