Default Maytag 82 Adjustable Rod

I just bought this 82 and upon disassembly to clean the parts I found this interesting modification. Someone took some time and slit the crank pin end. Then made a clamp out of some round stock bending it around the rod. It has shims in between and when a shim is removed, the clamp is tightened by the nut on top. Very ingenious!

Thinking that would throw it off balance some but maybe doesn't really affect it at all? repair looks pretty old. Guess even back in the day they didn't have a lot of 82 repair parts left on hand after they went to the 92's.

Yes it looks like they did what they had to do to keep it running! I have seen some cobbled up farm repairs before, but someone really put some thought and time into this rod! I disassembled, cleaned and replaced all the gaskets. Then coated with 50/50 linseed oil and mineral spirits. It looks pretty nice, but unfortunately someone dropped it and cracked the base at one time. I squirted in some gas and it took off. Now I think I will build a skid and make it a shelf queen.

Wow that is pretty crazy. I would throw that rod in the scrap bin. It is severley compromised, its a castrophie waiting to happen!! Look at it, they drilled a hole right through the center, then broke off the top outside flanges!! The only thing holding it together is the bottom flange, if it happens to come apart, you are going to be looking for alot more parts then just a rod!!
