Default Very low Maytag 92 serial 220181

I have just started to get into the hobby, and picked up a 1927 maytag side exhaust engine with the serial number 220181 which I believe makes this the 464th Maytag 92 made. I am curious if anybody has an even earlier one. It would be a huge project to try to inventory what serial numbers are known to exist, but was curious to know if any attempt has ever been made. I am trying to determine just how rare this engine might be due to its low serial number.

Thanks,
Adam

There were a lot of 92 types made. The side exhaust is not too common, so you could call it somewhat of a rarity. Welcome to the Stak and the old iron community. 'Old iron Disease' is has a complication - you need more iron! I don't know if anyone has made a maytag engine registry - it certainly would be some undertaking! At one time I owned 6 model 92s, 5 - 72 type twins (all 3 models), and an upright and an 82. Still have most of them yet! There were 4 or 5 different 92s, mostly fuel tank changes, and the exhaust change you noted. The 92 was the most produced small engine without a major design change. The basic engine was the same thruout production, form about 1927 to 1952, if I remember right, although some engines were assembled from parts as late as 1962, when maytag gor rid of their entire engine inventory (scrapped!).

Welcome to the hobby, you have come o the right place for good information. Do a search on this site, there are several threads on early 92's. Aside from the obvious side exhaust flange there are several other differences as well. Raised "open closed" on top plate, small dent on side cover, small carb screws, no main bearing oiler, no starter detent, fuel drain cock instead of plug. And I'm sure I've missed a few. They are really not rare, I would say more uncommon than other 92's. I have two, one is serial #256855. The other is still on its original washing machine. (don't have the # in front of me). The side exhausts usually bring $50-$100 more than common 92's depending on condition.

Thanks for the replies. I now have 8 92s and 2 72s now. I have all the fuel tank variations on my different 92 engines as well as two side exhaust 92s with the correct raised lettering on the top plate as well. I am on the hunt for a 82 now and would love to own a upright as well. My first 92 was one that I inherited from my Grandfather. He had removed it from his mothers washing machine when he converted it to an electric motor. He then later built a lawn mower that my dad used in the late 1950s. It is my favorite out of all of them. It has great original paint on it and that is how I am going to leave it.

Based on the known serial lists, I used to own the 127th one made. Figured it was made in the first few days of production. Found it in an old grain bin outside of Atwood Kansas, Got rid of it along with 51 other Maytags all at once, it was a good day for sure.

I have 17 side exhausts and a buddy of mine has 23. I know he has one in the 219xxx range.
