Default Sears 10XL Drive Belt Problem

Sears 10XL garden tractor, 2 speed rear. Worked well for the 25 years I've owned it. Last year the drive belt broke and I replaced it with the correct size belt (B70) and it never worked right since. I followed the adjustments listed in the manual but couldn't get the clutch to release the belt. It continues to turn and grind the gears or keeps driving. I changed to a B71 and it worked for a while and now acts the same way. The belt gets hot and won't release. Can't shift or stop.
So, wrong belt material, improper adjustment, or worn drive pulley allowing the belt to seat too deep?
Thanks.

Don't know if it is your problem but I have found fabric covered belts do much better in clutch service. With the others the rubber surface gets sticky and do not engage smoothly and do not release right. Hope others can help with your exact problem.

We had one that worked fine till someone changed the belt. They used the right belt but it kept getting tore up and getting between the pulley and gear case. I finally realized that the belt guide guard was removed, it holds the belt where it needs to be, in relation to the pulley, when the clutch pedal releases the tension. Without it the belt slack isn't at the pulley where it needs to be. I made a new one an installed it, no more trouble.

All the guards are in place. I loosened the belt and it's a little better but that's only a patch. I'd like to find out why it won't work with a new belt and adjusted per the book.

As Ken said, you need a fabric covered belt for clutch service. Newer design belts are intentionally designed to minimize slippage, and will not perform properly in clutch service. I have run into same issue.

Another vote for using a fully wrapped belt. Belts with raw rubber edges
tend to grab when used as clutches. Kevlar wrapped B-section belts are available from many sites listed on Google.
Also, a V-belt has a natural tendency to spring into a circular shape. That's a problem when the belt is used in a clutching application because when the belt tension is released to disengage the clutch, the belt still remains in contact with both pulleys. Restraining pins or guides are needed to hold the slackened belt in a location just barely outside its path when tensioned. Maybe these guides have been compromised on your tractor?

I think the guides are OK. I bought a cheap belt because I don't use the tractor except for plowing snow and hauling around some yard work. I just thought a short belt life would be the only problem with the cheaper belt.
Better belt is coming.
Thanks for the help.
