Post 1978 AG Tronic 2kw Generator

Well this is the creature I'm currently working on. Owner left gas sitting in it for well over three years, so the original tank is completely trashed. It has a Briggs 5hp 130232-0758-01 engine on it. So far I've has to de-rust all the shrouds and repaint them. The carby is still in decent shape, but I still installed a new pump diaphragm.

I want to do away with the points completely, and go to a Magnatron Ignition on it. At the moment I'm scouring old mower graveyards for a similar engine to get a mag from, as I've went through the entire ignition system and no spark period.

The owner has left it sitting in the elements, as the entire flywheel was rusted over and rusted to the original mag. His step son claimed he could get it going and FUBARED a whole lot of stuff. He says he'll pay me for parts plus about $200 labor to get it all cleaned up and operating again. I know it made power when I sold it to him three years ago.

Right now working on the gas tank with vinegar and assorted nuts to get all the rust out of the replacement tank, and have to do a bit of soldering to the threads for the gas cap, of which I also need to get. Once the tank is cleaned up proper, I'll flush it out with a bit of Acetone™ and treat it to prevent new rusting.

If he doesn't pay up, he ain't getting the unit back though. I've got too much of my own money tied up in parts and such. More pic to come once it gets light out. I'm headed for my tart of a bed at the moment.

Some more pics. The top of the cylinder is just as it was when I pulled the head. The head was a different story though. It was so carboned over that it took a couple of hours with a wire wheel and a dremel with a small wire wheel to get it cleaned. There is no ring ridge at all, and you can still see the factory crosshatch in the cylinder. I'm pretty sure this thing has really not seen much use at all. It didn't even smoke when I first got it going years back.

The air filter was completely clogged, which explains the buildup on the head and the exhaust port. Ended up ordering a Stens 100-081 air filter for a replacement. Add the fact that they basically forced an automotive R45TS spark plug in it, so now there is a small indentation around the plug hole. How can one mistake a small CJ8Y plug as one for a car?

Seeing as how he mounted it in his boat, they took it out of the original cage it was in. I've been after him for that old cage because I have a use for it, but I think they've pitched it long ago.

What kind of shape are the valve guides in ? The guides on both my 5hp engines are worn out. I will need to order the replacement guides and tools from Briggs before I go any further with their rebuilds. Good luck on your project.

How about using a J19LM instead??? A CJ8Y is an extended tip plug

No play in the valve guides at all in this one. It has a helluva lot of compression, hard to pull it over even with the easy-spin start.

Apparently mom is giving me the old Generac she bought years ago. It is a 5,000 watt with a 10 horse Tecumseh on it. They only ran it once in the couple of decades they had it. It's been run 5 more times by myself just to keep from getting more condensation in the crankcase(that was a frakking mess), and to keep from having to completely overhaul the carby again. That blasted thing is a bear to start unless you shoot some starting fluid into the bloody air cleaner. Loud as all get out too. I'll have to "modify" the exhaust a bit on it.

Well, I ended up ordering a NOS Magnatron for it. If I'm gonna do something, might as well do it properly.

As soon as it comes in, I can then start on reassembling everything and getting it going once again. Dude may get pissed about parts cost, but he told me to get it going no matter what.

New coil came in, and there will never again be points issues with this engine. Big fat BLUE spark! I'm thinking there is a crack somewhere in the damn carby, as it will only run smoothly on half choke, no matter where I adjust the mixture needle. Looks like I'm gonna have to get another one somewhere that matches this one, as it's the older style.

It runs good, and makes power as seen HERE.

Put a new diaphragm in the carb. Then it'll run fine without choke.

The diaphram acts as a fuel pump to pump gas from the main tank into the little tank under the short pickup tube. Fill the tank to the top, if runs OK diaphram is a problem. If still runs on only 1/2 choke you have another problem. Also make sure all the parts are there if someone else has been into it, there is a little spring and a little cup like part that need to be present and accounted for. Good luck.

The diaphragm in it is brand spanking new, as I made sure to replace it. It also has a leak of gas from the carb that I can't locate, which is why I suspect crack.

Quick Update: I found a small crack in the original carby, which was causing my fuel leaks on the tank. I found another carby in the hoard, now almost empty, and put the new diaphragm and assorted parts in it. I did find some high spots on the pump cover, so gently sanded it down a bit.

Before even thinking about putting any parts on this other carby, I soaked it down proper in solvent, and then sprayed out every passage on it, including the jet and pickup tubes. Have new tank gasket and new intake gasket ready to be installed. Now I'm just waiting on my repairs to the reservoir tank to set, and then to re-assemble the thing.

Finally got the bloody thing to run with a Frankenstein Carby, and completely JB Welding the reservoir cup. I've got parts from 3 different carbs in the original carb. I also checked for warping and found a hell of a lot where it mounts to the engine. Sanded all that down, wire wheeled the hell out of the original carb body, and installed all new gaskets to go with the new pump diaphragm I originally put in.

I never really was able to get the surging to completely stop, but it makes steady power so I ain't worrying about it. Guy owes me $140 just in parts plus labor.

It figures now that I have IT going, my new Tailgator gennie doesn't wanna start.
