Default Reid 15 hp Water Jacket

Hello to all, How thick is the casting on the waterjacket on a 15 hp Reid and does the jacket extend over to the crossover chamber and the charge cylinder? What is the best method for cleaning out the scale and mineral deposits in the water jacket?
Second question, on the blowoff valve, is the spring pressure preset at factory or is it adjustable depending on the size and age of engine
Third question, how large of water tank do you need to keep a nonworking 15 hp cool for show purposes and is tank shape critical? Thanks for your help , Jim.

Hi Jim,

not sure how thick the casting is but the water jacket does go over the crossover chamber but not the charge cylinder. To clean out the water jackets there are inspection covers that you take off to get into them.

Its really thick , about 1/2 " or so . Take the clean out covers off the head , and dig around in there with a piece of rebar .

The pop offs are set at what , 150 PSI maybe ? Some guys run universal ones . A 55 gallon drum will work just fine if its going slow . Shape isnt important ... elevation and the angle of the dangle on the top line -is - if it will be set up for thermosiphon . For an impromtu setup you put hoses on the inlet and the outlet lines , attach a 12V bilge pump to one and then toss it in the bottom of the barrel .... instant circulation . There is a diagram showing proper thermosiphonm set up at the below link

Hi all; I use a big brass adjustable pressure regulator (steam?) for a pop off om my 15 HP Reid. I set it to release at 45 pounds using air and an air regulator and guage. The only time that it has ever popped off in 10 years of showing is when I lean the fuel mixture too much. I try not to do this, as it is loud.and probably hard on the engine.

The REID relief valve should be set at 15 lbs. I have checked the pressure on more than a few factory relief valves and none of them were set above that.

Thanks Richard and John, I will print this thread and keep for when I am reassembling my Reid. I am worried that the man at at 150 psi may be headed for a broken rod. Thanks for the help. Jim
