Look for Karl Kaelble, Backnang, Suevia, Germany. Type R 1903 or later variations. They built everything possible self propelled such as stone crushers, saws, mills. As I mentioned already, the mill in the picture is certainly of German origin.

Kaelble R type from 1903, shortly later ioe and ohv variants were offered. Cam drive with governor, trip mechanism for low tension ignition, cylinder drain look at least similar. Photo courtesy of Klaus Schulz-Kalau.

USDA tweeted this photo yesterday of what appears to be an IHC LB engine powering a sprayer. Following is the photo caption: "Farmers spray raspberry bushes planted on the contour of a farm near Danville, Ohio circa 1939"

A couple of pictures from the Wafflard factory in Liège, Belgium. The last is of my two engines. The one on the right was found with some 15 or so identical engines in a small building where the last engine builder of the family made his engines. The older one was found in a shipwreck.

This isn't from a gas engine but an interesting 18" diameter crank shaft failure. Can only imagine what collateral damage might have happened when this let go.

That looks like the crank from our 100 HP De La Vergne SI engine.

A few more, first what I think is a Bentall? mainly because there was a Bentall agent in the area at the time, next a POW camp with Japanese prisoners using a Blackstone to cut wood, next a Hornsby gas engine at the Manning river dairy co-op, this pic I have used in another thread but don't believe I have used it in this one?? what looks like a Premier? engine at a Murray river pumping station.

This photo was posted by the late Chan Mason probably 15 - 20 years ago. It is of a large air blast Snow diesel that I believe (when taken) was still located at its original pumping house in Bradford, Pa . I think it may be the same engine that is next to the 600 HP Snow at Coolspring.

He is an interesting photo of an Otto with local history. The story that goes with it is as follows: Before leaving the Otto Factory in Philadelphia, records indicate it made 37 1/4 HP on their test stand. It was built in 1897 and installed at a foundry in Buffalo NY where it ran for one year and "experienced a catastrophic failure" and ejected the piston and connecting rod. The engine was removed from service, new parts installed and the collateral damage to the engine frame repaired. It was resold to Roger and Hemphill, a machine tool company, in Alfred New York where it operated a central line shaft powering planers, grinders and other typical shop equipment. This photo was taken in 1902 at the Alfred location. Engine is stated as 36 HP 11 1/4" cylinder dia x 18" stroke with 70 1/2" diameter flywheels. The engine can be seen outfitted with test equipment as they were trying to figure out why it was under performing.

Dad found this in his Natural Gas Service book by Samuel Wyer

They appear to be twin tandem Snows

Sad Iron,

Thanks for that photo and the book reference. I had a look for a pdf copy and found three. Strangely all three showed another scene. Also twin tandem engines in a natural gas compressing station.

I don't think they are the same type however. The engines in your photo look to have a "belt" around the middle of each cylinder. I have read that some US engines had two-piece castings for the water jacket, however I assumed it was a horizontal part line so the cylinder itself could be accessed (not sure).

BTW, I noticed that these very large Snow engines generally seem to have their valve gear on the side of the engine. I found a photo of a Westinghouse with similar layout, but the other makes of large gas engines seem to have their valves above and below the cylinder.
