Photo Another find on Craig's List, Briggs B & PB

I went today and picked up a Briggs B and an early PB..
The B has a carb included but the PB is without of coarse

Where is the serial number on the early PB's w/o tags.
Thanks, Randy

Randy,

My 1924 Briggs PB's serial Number is stamped on the boss on the block near where the oil filler is just like a Model P engine would be. This engine should also have a tin oil pan. Nice finds !

I went out with a light and found the raised pad ( exhaust end, shroud side ) where a number would be and nothing is stamped in it.. It also has a cast iron pan / sump.

I can never rule out what may have taken place in years past as far as swapping parts.. Perhaps better light and a closer look will give me a better idea.

* Mike it came from the Columbia Station area.

You should have stopped in! You were 10 minutes from my house. I recall seeing an ad for a Briggs B in Columbia Station around 1/22. Was the guy's name Paul? I emailed him and decided not to check it out. Guess I screwed up...

I got into the PB a little tonight and it looks pretty good over all.. I found no ser. numbers so I'm leaning towards a put together way back engine.. The flywheel is newer ( and very nice shape) and has an updated condensor. The mag plate looks great the coil is clean and throws a big fat spark... It has compression but I think the exhaust valve needs lapped in a little. I guess my next step will be to build a stand and start trying out some of the pb carbs I've collected and find a runner.. There are no tag holes in the shroud and no numbers to go by... not sure where I'll end up with this before it's all over

If the crankshaft has right hand threads for the flywheel nut then it was made before serial number 22974. They switched to left hand thread crankshafts after that. Did you remove the piston? If so are there 2 or 3 rings?

Thank you rusty iron, it has left hand threads on the flywheel nut.. I didn't remove the piston.. I think after i lap the valve in a little it should fire up.. It's looking even more like someone did some fixing years ago with a much older shroud..

I'm by no means a PB expert.. the throttle in the intake has me a little puzzled.. were those on the much older units only or can these have a throttle and be newer ?

Thanks, Randy

From what i have seen they mixed and matched elbows throughout the entire production run except for the very early engines equipped with Basco carburetors. According to the literature i have, the elbow with the throttle valve assembly was "used on engines with carburetors without throttle valve assembly" but it does not say if it was used on early or late models. My Q model has the throttle valve assembly in the elbow and the carburetor is wide open, not even a choke valve, runs like a top.
