Default Throttle Valve Issues?

We are having problems with a disc type throttle valve leaking by. Tried dressing the discs in to the tapered seat but no luck. Tried a small spring between the discs last year and yes, that kept it from leaking past. But at certain times, it set up an annoying chatter inside the valve!
In taking it apart the other day, it seems like the discs are seating okay. When they are closing the valve openings, the yoke/valve stem assembly has a lot of play back and forth over the discs. Is it possible that with steam pressure on, the lost motion in the yoke is allowing the discs to come off the seats?
Just wondered if any one has had similar issues and might have ideas? Could the stem be built up inside where the discs sit to take away some of the lost motion?
Thanks for any help,
G.

There used to be an Old Guy in Kansas City I believe that would repair the gate type throttle valves. What he would do is resurface the discs and seats and build up the ball and socket between them and they wouldn't leak after that. I sent one to him in the mid 80's and the cost was 7.50...

That must have been Ed Croley. He did mine in 1970. Don't remember the price.

Bingo.... That was the Guy. He would surface the discs then set up the body in his Mill and do the seats... Then would have to build up the ball to take up the extra space...

Beff,
It would be nice to come down but since I am a poor, grub-staker Canuck, it is hard to do everything! Probably next year - more my brand!
There will be plenty of Ontari-ites there, some of them may even be civilized! For heavens sakes, don't believe everything the Sawyer-Massey guys will tell you! Even some of them may be switchting over to Waterloo!
And keep an eye on Phlying Phil and his entourage from West Unity and points beyond!
Is there any sweet corn in season? If so, enjoy the Stak supper. I'll be home gnoshing some fresh Ontario strawberries and ice cream!
Have a great show. I hope the weather is perfect and everyone plays safe and happy. Oh, the words water, water, water come to mind! Where have I heard that before?
Aloha,
G.
