If there is a heavy duty push button, I am betting that the generator is also electric start. I have a CE model and it has a basic start/stop system. It has a push button to ground the mag ignition and a heavy duty push button for the start system. Pull the band off of the gen end and take a look to see if you have any brushes on a segmented commutator. If you do, and wires are running to them, you should be able to use a battery for starting. If I am wrong, one of the experts will slap me around and correct me.

Default Onan CCK-5.0 pull start change to elec start

The key as to whether or not your CCK has electric start capability is in the model number. The "e" indicates that yours should have electric start capability by means of the generator being able to develop enough torque in motor mode to start the set. See the attached .pdf file.

The generator in any CCK will act as a motor if the 12 Volt output of the generator is brought out so that it can be connected to a 12 Volt battery for starting. Yours should have an obvious connection point and, hopefully, a solenoid that looks like an old auto starter solenoid. (The solenoid is not exactly the same internally as a common auto starter solenoid, so, if your solenoid is faulty, don't expect it to be replaceable by one you get at your local auto parts store without specifying "exactly" what you need.)

Your generator should have both series and shunt fields, which together will make a strong enough magnetic field to make the generator capable of enough torque to turn over the engine. I can tell you that it takes a lot of amps to do so. You need a strong battery and short battery cables to make it turn over this way. Ordinary jumper cables from your car battery (even if the battery is really hot) won't do it.

This topic has been covered in detail in several threads about 4 or 5 years ago. I can probably dig them up if your search doesn't yield results.

Let me know if you need some help. I am just down the road from you.

See the attachment for a full expose'.

Regards,
Richard

That one should be electric start with pull start as a backup system. There will be a switch in the control box that says Hand Crank/ Electric Start. We could all met at your place for BEER and Ribs. Or go to the Salt Lick if your buying

I put a battery and gas to it, turns over, no spark and no smell of gas, I think there must be some kind of trigger solinoid that is not letting the fuel pump work and the coil from firing... any help would be appericated ...grbillings@sbcglobal.net....thanks for the info on the cck I'll start on it next week if I have the energy after work

Richard, I think this is probly more than my skill set allows for, I'm decent with brake down and put back together on the engine side, and carb tuning, but the Electrical is all French to me. So Richard, Billy [any of you guys] may be you can call me some eveing next week and see if you can walk me some through it or, maybe we can get together some weekend and you can show me the way...again many thanks to all of you.. 512-635-3786

Post a picture of the front of the control panel and of inside the box. It should be an easy fix if it has the same setup as my 5.0CCK-3CE.

Roundrockcrawler,

I'll try to remember to call you this evening, although there are many others on this board that can provide remote help at least as well as me and probably better. I have only the advantage of closeness in case you need a house call, which I will be glad to do if necessary. David C has given a very good suggestion that you snap a few pictures of your genny so we can all see exactly what parts may (or may not) have been removed/changed since it was built, and to refresh our memories. Onan made a very large number of similar units over the years and since yours was made in 1979, and despite the existence of good documentation, I can claim poor memory of its original configuration and capabilities. Nevertheless, we'll get you fixed up and make that old Onan good as new!

Regards,
Richard

The file size might be too large if you did not resize them. If Billy gets too busy (he is always helping at least 5 people at one time around here) I will resize and post them for you.

Here are some pictures of my 5.0CCK 3CE control box. The pictures did not come out as clear as I wanted, but I was not going back to the shop to retake them. It looks like Onan supplied a short pigatail off of the start button, as the heavy gauge appears to be original, for the positive cable. You can see the cable splice that was done by the previous owner.
