Default Need opinion on Onan CCK spec R

Okay fellas,

I ran across a 4.0 CCK-3cr spec R made in August of 74 and was hesitant to pick it up. I was able to talk him down to $200 but even then I wasn't quite sure. I want to see what ya'll think.

Problem #1: The control board on top was pretty much toast. I think it was resistor R13 was burnt in half. This is what really pushed me away. I know alot of ya'll replace these boards with relays and such, but just wasn't sure at the time.

Here's my thinking on this, if I have to dump $300 or $400 in this, it's not really worth it to me. I'd have more in it than its worth, and I want to replace my CCK-1R with a 240V machine.

Problem#2: They were using a replacement fuel pump that was attached to the OEM. Another words, the new fuel pump was pushing through the old one.

This is not a really big deal, but still another turn away for me.

Problem#3: It seemed to be running slow.

Again, probably no big deal. Just needs a governor adjustment or a carb cleaning. It did misfire a couple of times.

Problem #4: Missing a few nic nacs here and there. Rubber feet pads etc.

Problem #5: While it was running, the dude pulled the battery off.

Argh!! Eventhough it wasn't my machine yet I wanted to

Your opinions please

David

Your better off with the relays. An easy fix. The other things are minor. Dont like the fact he disconnected the battery while running. It does produce voltage? Try for a little lower. If it doesnt produce voltage forget it.

I don't know exactly what problems are caused when the battery is removed.

Does it mess the exciter up, or the 12V side? He's done it twice that I know of.

He said it produced power, and I trusted him. The reason I trusted him was because he said it ran, and it did. If I decide to go back, I will check for power.

I couldn't get him off the $200, he said it was worth that in scrap to him, so thats going to be his lowest price.

Personally, in the condition it's in, I think $200 is too much. For another $100 or so you could buy a complete and properly running Onan, but as they say, "A bird in the hand...".
But, then again, this is from a guy who bought a cherry 120/240 BF for 50 bucks!

lol. I think i've pretty much have decided to stay away from it. I'm really looking for a 5.0-3c, but for some reason they are alot harder to find. I have seen them, but they're asking a arm and a leg for'em.

Pulling the battery off is not good and he is an idiot for doing so. I would stay away from it. Sounds like it has more problems than he is telling you about.

When I was a kid. People would pour lard into manual transmissions. Made them sound new for about a hundred miles.

His board is toast because he pulled off the battery. You'd want to replace it with relays anyway. It's not hard, but annoying to have to do. Definitely check for power. The other issues are minor. I own a 4.0CCK Spec R, and love it, but $200 is on the edge for me, and I'd be able to justify it as a spare parts machine for mine.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I made the right decision. Just too many things wrong with it.
