Some were green some were black depending on model. If the original paint is all gone and you want to paint it you can. Its your engine. There are people that like the engines orginal and some like them painted all up. In my books its your engine and you can paint what colour you want. I have seen a pink Gilson. They were never pink.

Hi Randy, The model 92 or single cylinder kick start engine was originally painted green. Nothing ever turned up in the records indication anything else. That said some appear to be original to other colors, but this could be explained by being sold to jobbers for other purposes then Maytag intended. I agree with James, paint it what ever color you want. Some may not like it but its your engine.
If you want to go original shade of green here is a formula for paint mixed to match original NOS parts with good green paint on them. A fantastic match. Available at any DuPont Automotive Paint store. Print this out and take it to them and they will mix it for you. This is for a quart of paint but you can get a pint if you want. They will calculate for such. This system is similar to the old Centari system. Very easy paint to shoot. I can provide a formula for Centari as well.
