I have been google-ing my fingers to death.... What does the "FJ" suffix at the end of 7.5 DKDFJ mean? Are there any particular years that are desirable? Any rare options that I should be on the lookout? Again, I know nothing about diesel gensets other than the fuel stinks.

I almost forgot to ask... What is a reasonable price for a 7.5 DKD in decent condition as well as in fair but running condition? While doing some googles I found a 7.5 DKDFJ in excellent condition for $4,500. I almost had a heart attack.

Hey JohnnyC, I always liked that smell but didn't truly know what it was for many years. When I was a kid we had this stuff called "Weed Oil". It was in a big drum, and dad sprayed weeds with it. Years later, after he died, we rented a big moving truck, which had to be returned with it's fuel tanks refilled. It was that night, refilling those fuel tanks with diesel that I instantly recognized the smell. Weed Oil! To this day it brings back fond memories Nowadays the EPA would have a coronary lol!

I don't think there are any deal-breakers as far as options. Watch out for weird voltages or 3-phase though. They came with and without meters - there was an RV version, and one with no radiator, for external cooling use. Also don't forget about the DKC. Basically identical, but the engine has smaller bore and displaces 680 cc instead of 930 cc, and of course a smaller generator.

I paid scrap value for mine, but had to grind the valves and re-ring the engine.

A year or two I paid $700.00 for mine, I saw it run but would not produce A/C. It was pretty much complete, had, has spots of surface rust on the gen. end. Original belt and coolant hoses.
With help from some of the guru's here I had it producing A/C in no time. Bad bridge rectifier. Maybe a $10.00 part or less. Transformer regulated. I still need to get the mini alternator working on it though to keep the battery charged.

I want to say that to get a running DKD you should not be paying more than 2500$ , there is one for sale in Bend oregon for that

http://bend.craigslist.org/hvo/5453989292.html

I think the DKC is too small to pay serious money for, I sold one a while ago for $1800 CDN (1350 US) which I thought was all it was worth. If you can find a DKD like Viking66 did for cheap it would be worth some effort to fix up.

http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155973

Cheers Dan

Darts I think the only way to get full power out of your DKD is going to be put a tiny turbo on it to compensate for the elevation. Also to get your tiny alternator working you will need a Kubota voltage reg off EBAY for about $25.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Regulator-Re...-/270871843884
It is actually a permanent magnet dynamo so it should put out around 25V Ac when running which the regulator/rectifier turns into voltage regulated 14V Dc to charge the battery It will put out around 15A charging current. Cheers Dan

Thanks all for the crash course education on the DKD. Looks like they hold value on resale. I am thinking about modifying my CL ad for my 15.0JC with a statement indicating that I'm willing to trade for an Onan 7.5 DKDFJ in decent physical and working condition and keeping my eyes open. I don't recall seeing any for sale on CL in my area.

Question - What about the Quiet Diesel gensets such as the one in the link below? It is 7.5kw and has a Kubota diesel motor? The seller wants $700 which means is some talking I can get it for $500. I know it need gen end work, but I can figure it out.

****** I just read more on the 7500 QD in the ad and it is a 120 vac ONLY genset. I want 120/240 vac.

I just updated my CL ad for my Onan 15.0JC. I now have trade clause in my CL ad for an Onan 7.5 DKD in excellent condition. I think it would be a fair trade after seeing how much the 7.5 DKD gensets go for.

Johnny, I like older units my MDJB is old it is a tough old unit and being a J series onan you know it will last. I would look for a 6 or 7.5 diesel unit. You would need to pay me to remove one of those quite diesel units, engine might be ok but the inverter for ac output is flakey at best.

It is the new code that onan went to a few years ago. Instead of saying 18 or what ever. It is now an FJ code. I will have to look it up to be exact.

And the more people that think that way, the better for Johnny C, who asked for a genset less than 6.5 kW...

I think I will look for a 7.5 or 6.0 DKD, but I doubt I will find these in my area.

You could also look for a light tower. Many of those had Kubota powered ~6kw generators. Here's one example:

the FJ code is equivalent to -3CR
F for stationary/electric/remote start
J for 4-wire 120/240

The QD sets pretty much need the control/shutdown/regulator system re-worked, so if you are comfortable building electrical stuff - this is the cheapest path to a good diesel set, buy broken and repair it. Inverter sets are probably the worst with variable RPM, but anything with microprocessor controlled BS has this as it's own great weakness. For a liquid-cooled genset to fit into a small box, they are sometimes belted up to a 3600RPM 2-pole generator head. I believe the QD you linked to for $700 is an inverter model, and there's a manual (981-0522) that covers it in the repository. Has a permanent magnet alternator, direct driven, rpm listed as 1600-3300. Nice engine, could drive anything with it.
