Irvon:

"Half Breed" engines are steam engines that have been converted to internal combustion engines. This is usually done by scrapping the cylinder and valve chest and substituting a cylinder with valves and hot tube or spark plug.

In other words, most of the engine is re-used when it is converted.

thank you. the one i saw running had a stuffing box on the piston rod , same as double acting steam.the intake air seamed to enter at the rod end of the cyl ,on the compresion stroke, how dose the air get to the head end? some air must enter at the head to pull in the gas charge. this engine looks so simple but has me baffled thank you for your help.

Irvon:

The half-breeds with a stuffing box for the bottom of the piston are 2-cycle. The space below the piston is used to draw in the fuel/air charge and force it into the area above the piston. There's a transfer port between the bottom and top half and usually a check valve.

Otherwise, they operate just like a 2-stroke chain saw, etc.

Take care - Elden

Go to Google patents and enter 626155. This is the original Fithian patent on a conversion cylinder to make a gas engine from a steam frame.
