Tom S it will be rusty , as Stuart Landry once said to me i took 100 years to get that rusty look , i have no desire to paint thing again , when i first started out i done the whole filling and painting jobs but could never satisfy myself, plus the paint job only last so many years

here are a few more pics of getting the tractor to its new home in the city, most of the the trip was on the low loader then we had to off load it on to a tilt tray to get it into my back yard

I have finally found time to start doing a few thing to the new tractor , i have been restoring every thing as i pull it off so it won't be as bigger job when it comes to putting it back together.
starting with the fuel pumps i would say by the paint on the valve covers that they have never been apart, had to make new pistons and replace the balls with ss ones .

next started to have a look at the cam shaft and i would have say i am pretty happy with that so far , i can not see any signs of wear or damage.
but the intake has water in it as i suspected so there will be some work to do there but i won't take the heads off untill the pistons are out .

To put those figures in a way that can be viewed that equates to 58 tons and 62 tons of force on the piston.
Somewhat tight.

Or 30 x 2 ton cars stacked one on top of each other supported by the piston if you rotated the bore to a vertical position, is another way to look at it .(rough figures)

May I be one of the first to congratulate you on the arrival of your twins, How much did they weigh??

And is Mommy doing OK ??

She may have a little "separation anxiety " until the twins are back where they belong.

Have Fun

Kevin

Well Kevin the second one is here now ,two days later .
both boys are doing fine i think i am gonna call them Michael & Paddy , but seeing you were the first to come forward you mite have to be the godfather [ but a long way to come visit them]

Alastair thats a lot pressure, i know i hand pumped them all the way and there doses not seem to be any damage doing it this way , the pistons still have the factory machining markings on them with very little running wear .

Mr. McClelland,
Just great to see another fine machine brought back into the living.
It warms the cockles of the heart to fire up one of those ol' gals and feel the heat build up in the cylinders. Looks like you will experience that soon.
All the best with the project!
RM.

Joe Good work getting those pistons out with out damage, not sure about Alastair's figures, not knowing the piston dia. I figure if they were 7' dia it would equate to about 6 tons and if they were 10" dia about 12 ton pressure, I am sure 50 tons would have caved in the top of the old cast iron pistons.
By the fact you can still see the maching marks on the pistons and rings maybe she has not done much work at all.
Norm.

I think Norm has it. This Titan should be 9" bore so the surface area of the piston is just a bit less than 64 in^2. 64 in^2 x 350 lb/in^2 = 22,400 lb or a little less than 11 tons.

Yes my bad.....made a mistake - i was working in Metric units.

doing it in imperial confirmed your answers and i was working on a 10 inch piston.

Here are the steps spelled out.

(Force/area) = pressure so rearranging pressure x area = force.

Pi (3.1412) or 22/7 x Radius (piston) squared =area(square inches)

So pressure (pounds/square inch) x area(square inches) = force(pounds) cancelling units.

Then 1 pound is 0.4535 kg or 0.0004535 ton (1000kg to a ton)

so using 10 inch piston i get 12.466 ton and 9 inch piston get 10.098 ton.

figures not so high.

KISS =......

Rm it mite be while before that happens , there is lots to do and i am going to savour the moment because i don't think it will happen to me again . there is probably a hundred years of ploughing bottled up inside her that is waiting to be released though.
Norm i am enjoying the challenge to do it with out damage i have done all the other stuff where you break it first then fix it , there is no time limit on this project ,but i did get all the valves free today by taping on them after soaking and with out heat , so thats a bonus.
The pistons are quite thin and light compared to famous engines and look quite fragile , yes 9 "

I had been wondering if the igniters had been taken out in later years or were taken out when it stopped and maybe the reason they couldn't keep it going, i think this mite shed some light on it
