We got the frame steam cleaned this week and got the draw bar back from being repaired at the weld shop. The draw bar is the first thing that goes in the frame when it goes back together. The sand blaster is due here Monday to get started making it pretty. Wendell Kelch

Hey Windell, I've been hearing about this project, through Vince, even before you started. What are you doing for lugs and skid rings? As you know, we need some for our 35/70...ED

We got the frame blasted today. It was a cold day here in Bethel, Ohio so it was nice and warm in the blast suit! There was not a lot of daylight left when we got done . It is in the paint shop safe and dry and ready to be prepped for its shinny coat of gray paint. Wendell Kelch

WOW! Green grass and no snow! There is 6" of snow here and now it is UP to 8 degrees, 3 hours ago it was -5!

---------- Post added at 10:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:41 PM ----------

I am curious, how long did it take to blast the frame and how much sand did you use?

With the set up ,blasting , putting it away and cleaning up the barrels and pallets about 7 hrs. I didn't count the empty bags but my guess 10 to 12 100# bags! This morning it is 15 degrees with 1 in of snow on the ground. You have to pick your days for outside work here and also a day the blaster is off work from his regular job so a lot of things got to come together! If everything works out we are going to blast some smaller parts Friday. Not near as big a deal for little(littlier) pieces . The big stuff has to be completed and stored inside the same day or you lose everything you did that day! Wendell Kelch

We tackeled the transmission shaft this week. What a pain! Everything was tight but the inner clutch drum was impossible to get off. I even used some old school tricks I learned out on service calls 50 miles from nowhere when all I had was a log chain and a bottle jack to get a hub off! No Luck! I wil show you how I got it in the next post

I got to the point where I was going to break that drum if I got any rougher with it so I decided I could make a shaft a lot easier then a drum so I got my porta band saw out and sawed the 4 in shaft in two! It took a while but better then a hack saw! I then got the gear out of the way and took it to a BIG press and 25 tons is what it took to move the shaft out of the drum! I don't think the spokes on the drum would have stood for 25 tons! We lost a shaft but saved a drum. All is well! This is one of those jobs that leaves you with a lot of sore fingers but you are glad to still have all 10! Wendell Kelch

As dad and I say sometimes. Every tool in the shop was out today. Another very interesting project from the Kelch repair team.

This Minnie has a direct drive for low gear and 2 snap over center clutches and drums for reverse and high gear. So it has a early power shift where you can change directions without disengaging the main clutch. There is 8 clutch pads on the 2 drums and with all the pins and linkages there are around 50 pieces in the hi and reverse gear clutches. All needing new pins, welded up ,turned down or bored and rebushed. All the parts are scraped ,blasted and in primer. There are a lot of big and little pieces in a big tractor! Wendell Kelch

We sandblasted transmission gears today. The crap on them was like concrete. When we started out this morning the temp. was just above ZERO! 4 hrs later when we finished it had got up to 10 degrees! with the before and after pictures you can see how much better things look cleaned up. Thank goodness for block heaters in the air compressor! We got 3 pallets blasted today. Wendell Kelch

Whoa! Norm - that works out to 120 F! That's quite a dramatic comparison to the subzero temps up here!

There is always belt work to do also. Check out the head lights on the front of the frame.

We started putting grey paint on Minnie parts this week. We are going to try and get a few more pallets blasted this weekend. If all goes well the frame will be painted next week. Wendell Kelch

Ahhhh,
Something on the order of battleship gray...a simple shade of gray color that I have learned to appreciate.
Hey Wendell,
I see a lot of blasting sand on the ground around your worksite. When it is time to retire, you can dig a pond and the sandy beach will already be there waiting for you!
