If memory serves me right, when I called Odie to buy gaskets, he said to soak them first. I also plug the ports and fill the coolers up with oil on the bench before going on the tractor. In at least one case it's because I didn't have the tractor! On that particular unit, the guys that mounted the cooler pulled the nuts off the stay rods and annealed the copper washers to soften them so they would seal. As for Rumely fever, the gear cover on the pulley side is a far better cure then going through a cooler! Lastly, if you're up and running Don, you know we're going to need to see a video.

I finally got back to work on the 15-25 and today got the sleeves pulled out to clean the block out. It does not look too bad, just some sludge in the bottom. The seals on the crankcase side of the sleeves look pretty good and will probably reuse them with some high temp sealer around them. What is the best kind to use? I'm going to get some new rings made and put a oil control ring on the bottom with holes drilled in the piston. I think I read on another thread that 5 holes is sufficient. The sleeves don't look bad and will probably just need a good hone job and maybe a slight top ridge cut off.

I've used permanent "right stuff" with good success.

Permatex Ultra Copper has been a good reliable product for such applications. It makes a permanent rubber-like ring. It is for high heat.

I have used this ultra copper on a head gasket one time that was a problem sealing. I just had to use it sparingly as not to plug up any cooling ports. It seemed to work well.

as in you did away with the felt ring, and just used that and lots of it?

Cody,
Used the Permatex along with the original ring. It helped take up any imperfections with the ring.

Both of mine were done that way. No seal, just goop. Like i tried to say earlier (dad gum auto corect),I used permatex right stuff. It comes with a gun and 2 tubes of stuff. Pretty sure I used a tube per jug. Not as cheap as the regular goop, but works like a hot dang.

Here is the latest on my project. The piston ring grooves are wore so the machine shop is going to cut them some and install a slightly wider ring. Another problem came up as the casting on the belt pulley is cracked so it's going to the same shop that brazed up the transmission housing. The clutch engaging collar ( that slides on the pulley shaft to work the clutch) is completely wore out. Must have not been greased much. It could be built up and repaired but i'm going to see if I can find a better one. I did get the sleeves honed and installed back in the block. I used the old packing and put permatex copper sealer around them. The head will be worked on soon. The valve guides are wore some and will need one exhaust valve. Has anyone ever had valve guides knurled? I just wonder if this would help much on the play in them. Pictured are the sleeves before installing and the wore out clutch collar.

I don't see anything that can't be repaired.......
As for the chipped sleeve......don't give that another thought.
It won't hurt a thing.

No, i'm not concerned about the chipped sleeve. That clutch piece is really thin on the wear surfaces and would take a lot of brazing and finishing. My machine shop said they could probably do it, but I told them i'd try to find one better first. I'll have to weigh the cost differences as I get into it more. I will get new valve guides if knurling the old ones is not a good option. Anyone replacing sleeves back in the block on a Rumely, remember to line up the marks so the oiler tubes from the block to the sleeve line up.

The clutch drive disc was loose on the crankshaft, so we bored out the disc and installed a sleeve to tighten it up. The crank was polished and shows very little wear. The brass bushings in the belt pulley are in real good shape so they will be reused. They were taken out so the pulley could be preheated and brazed to repair the small crack. I thought these bushings would be wore and caused the two drive gears to wear out so badly, or maybe it was just a lack of lubrication. We are working with the pistons now and got a price from Niagara rings and they are quite pricey. Does anyone have any other source for piston rings?

I did get a much better clutch collar from Biewers. As you can see in the pics this one has a much better wear surface inside. I probably would have had more cost in repairing the one I had than what I purchased this one for. You can also see the one that I took off the tractor and how wore it was. The two have different part numbers (c5p2733 and c5p2732), but look the same. The one that came from Biewers had some steel blue paint on it so it must have been on a later superpower, or maybe from a different model like a W? Anyway it should work fine. I am going to have the rim on the sleeve (the round piece with arms) built back up to fit the inside of the collar, and put new pins on all the linkages. This should make a nice working clutch. Still working with a couple of people for rings.

I am getting the rings from Otto engine, but may be a while before Dave has them made. In the meantime the top two ring grooves are being machined out to fit 5/16 rings, and I'm working with the crankshaft and main bearings trying to get the shims right. Should there be any clearance at all with the crankshaft end play? I know it should have no resistance and turn freely. I'm having the belt pulley repaired by the same man who repaired the transmission housing. The crack turned out to be longer than I thought. At first I was just going to have the noticeable crack on one side repaired and not mess with the machined side for the clutch, but after preheating and brazing the crack showed up on the clutch side too. So now it is going to be cut out, brazed and machined down. I'm so glad I tore this tractor completely down to find things like this. Here are pics of the belt pulley. More to come soon.
