Default 1927 Fordson Start Up Procedure

Hello all,
A close friend of mine just picked up a 1927 Fordson tractor and needs a copy on the written start up procedure. He was told they can be a bit picky on start and would like fist try to be by the book.
I suggested he joins the Stak and he plans on it in due time.
Thank you.

#1 make sure its in neutral,#2 set spark lever just above brass button on dash,#3 turn on gas and pull out choke,#4 crank-do not wrap thumb around handle !,back choke off 1/2 when it fires.Note, unless it has aftermarket addon there is no governor-easy on throttle or will overspeed.good luck, all have a quirk to learn

There's not really too much to these old Fordsons.

1. Be sure the transmission is in neutral.

2. Check to see that petcock is open and fuel in tank.

3. Be sure spark lever is retarded (down)

4. Engage crank at the 9 o'clock position.

5. While pulling choke rod, give a couple of quick pulls upward on the crank to prime.

5. Give a quick pull up on the crank with throttle lever about half open and hope she fires.

6. If the engine starts, advance the spark lever (up) until she smooths out.

Note: If you've never started the tractor and it has a belt pulley and you have another tractor with a belt pulley, it would be advisable to belt her up and start it that way until you get everything adjusted and running smoothly.

Grasp that crank handle with your thumb on the same side of the handle as your fingers and always double check the spark is retarded or you may very well experience the "Ford Fracture".

Don't try to spin the engine, if everything is about right it will start with quick quarter turns up on the crank.

Everyone has given you some very good advice. My only comment is that a Fordson this old can have anything for a fuel system, ignition etc. The first questions to answer is this all original, when was it last started, is the gas tank and carburetor clean. What ever you have it would be a good idea to post some Pictures so we can determine what you have and how to proceed. If it is all original the starting procedure would be what is included above and again never forget the position of the thumb on the crank. Ed B

did think of 1 more thing-air cleaner needs to be full of water or leave fill plug out or it will block off the air intake to engine with the float at bottom.good luck and enjoy.Roy
