Default Twin City 20-35 "Canadian"

Home after an interesting 900 mile pull with this load. Loaded the tractor just east of Edmonton AB.

While there is no such thing as a "Canadian" version of the 20-35 this one has been in Canada long enough to have acquired citizenship there. It will always be a "Canadian" to me.

Phil Johnson had the good fortune of bringing this one out of the bush. I bought it from him last December. My wife and I decided to wait until the weather moderated before making the trip. Mid June was our first opportunity to head out.

We took Hwy 2 across northern North Dakota and Montana and drove up the east side of Glacier National Park. We entered Canada at the Piegan port of entry. I was asked:
1. Purpose in coming to Canada?
2. Length of stay?
3. Any firearms or tobacco in vehicle?
4. Any Items that will be sold in Canada?
5. Cash in excess of $10,000?
6. Purpose of the trailer?
I explained besides tourism I had purchased a tractor in Dec 2015 in the Edmonton area and planned to haul it back through the Estevan SK port of entry on the way home. I had to verbally confirm that the money transfer had already taken place.
It took us 4 minutes to enter Canada. My wife timed it!

After entering Canada we took Hwy 2 north to Calgary which is quite the metropolis!. From there we spent the next day touring Banff and Jasper National Parks. The splendor of the Canadian Rockies on the loop was spectacular and well worth the time and added miles to go and see.

Pulling the car trailer through the parks had it's limitations as a fair amount of the north bound photo turnouts were too short to accommodate the added length. Also the well used Dodge (366,000) spent most of the day in 4th gear so it pretty much used up a day to drive through the parks. Spent the night in Hinton.

1. Picking up the daily pass when entering Banff Park
2. Some snow flurries and cool temps for mid June!
3. At the Lake Louise visitor center...kind of a midway point.
4. 97 Dodge 3500 converted to single wheels and flatbed w/ Tarnel 21' tilt bed car trailer with winch. The service tank was full when I crossed into Canada. This on board fuel supply was to prove useful for the trip back home loaded.

Great and wonderful find,

We are nuts about Canadian history tractors.

For more then 20 years we have one from an very old Canadian state park.

Shortly ago found some new info about this make.

Woult be an very nice thread to post an new thread next winter about this tractor with an old blue document.

Keep the info and history coming in.

I might be a bit biased but the BEST tractors fro restoration come from the Canadian Prairies. With our cold climate and lower humidity old tractors are more preserved. Motors aren't normally seized badly when exposed to the elements. Not alot of rust do to humidity. Most tractors were only run from May to late October. Basically they have 1/2 the hours of most tractors. The bordering states would be next in line

After leaving Hinton we made a beeline for Edmonton and then on to Tofield which is east about 40 minutes or so. We arrived at lunch time and did the ol' "watch where most of the traffic is going" to choose a restaurant. From there we headed out to Phil Johnson's residence.

Besides the 20-35 I was interested in a rebuildable TC 17-28 short block assembly. Phil had one out already but when we looked it over it was missing a few important components. Phil decided to pull another engine out of a parts tractor so we laid out the tools and got after it. We had it out in a couple hours. Phil kindly donated a homemade engine stand so the motor could ride upright. We loaded this right behind the service tank so that as much weight as possible would be transferred to the front axle.

Phil had an interesting yard mule...an Allis-Chalmers D-17 LPG with a factory loader installed. When is the last time you saw one of these?

That's a great loader tractor and was quite a deal as the original owner had no further use for it and was going to scrap it. I got it for next to nothing and all it needed was a pair of rear tires (which I already had) and fill the tank. Everything else worked fine and was in great shape.

Mark, I didn't know your wife was taking pics when we were pulling the engine out of the old 17-28! We lucked out on the weather that day as it's been raining hard just about every day since.

Yep...She can be kind of sneaky with that sort of thing and sometimes ends up with some pretty candid shots. She knows that I don't multi-task well and that I will wish that I had taken some pictures of the activity I'm absorbed in at the time.

Before heading to Canada I had given some thought on which trailer to take. I also own a 28ft 20,000# GVW tandem axle trailer that would have easily handled the load but it's a heavy trailer to pull and I didn't relish the thought of pulling it that far. I figured with the car trailer I would have 14,000# of load capacity plus the 7000# rear axle on the truck. I calculated the 20-35 to weigh in at about 9000# or so while I knew it would be a stout load to haul it appeared to be within the capacity of the car trailer to do it.

There was one potential problem with the car trailer idea and when we got to Phil's I measured up the tractor to see if it existed. Sure enough...while the trailer had plenty of length the tractor would have to be loaded rear axle 1st to get the load to balance. The problem was the tractor rear wheels were wider than the space between the trailer tires. After some discussion Phil and I decided to remove the trailer fenders and tires and block the trailer. There was a learning curve here as neither of us had loaded a trailer this way. The tractor winched on surprising well.

Been there and don that several times. My trailer is made in MN. Nice low profile 22 ft 21k. Has only 78 inches between fenders. I widened trailer and built ramps to go right over fenders. I like to haul more than one! My Ford 6.l has 538km. Found hauling a 97 Massey or G1000 on back hopped too much. They can clip 10K with fluid. Made a run this AM 5 hours(300 miles) and got back to bale 30 round bales by 6. Can't do it like I used too! A couple times before I made up and down ramps I had to take one wheel off.

Hope to see more pictures of progress soon! Good to see that you guys aren't quite as old as TC Tony.

You sure fooled me! Hope I look that good if I get that far! Eyeing up those front wheels.as I need a set for a MM.

Always found it odd very few TC landed in MB. A few more in SK and AB is loaded with them especially 17-28's. One fellow phoned and he had 7!

Well....to put things in perspective Phil was already a teenager when I was born! But before you get the idea the he is older than dirt one look at his ride will tell you he's not quite nursing home material yet.

First time I've seen one. Simply put the car is beautiful! This one recently developed some engine troubles. I encouraged Phil that once he starts digging into it to start a thread on the repair as I am sure there are others here on the Stak who would be interested in vintage British sports cars also.

Once the Twin City was up on the bed of the trailer it was "just" a matter of jacking the trailer and reinstalling the fenders and tires. I say "Just" as we had most of Phil's jack and block inventory strewn about the yard before we were through. Phil taught me a new word when we were chaining up. (No..not one of those words!). He asked me if I had a "skinner" along and I had no idea what he was talking about. Turned out to be the cheater pipe that gets used on the lever style load binder. Load straps on the fenders were a necessity as they flopped pretty bad. Most of the problem there was the Twin City method of anchoring the lower fender supports to the now non-existent wood platform.
When we pulled out of Phil's it was about 8:30 PM and we headed to Camrose (about 1/2 hour away) where we spent the next 2 nights.

It was the end of a very interesting day for us and we were glad to have made Phil's acquaintance.
