Default JD 1.5 horse mains

I finally got all the new parts that were ordered so tomorrow it's going back together. I adjusted the shims on each of the mains (one at a time) til it was barely turnable, then added .001 (two shims on each side of each cap), making sure the shim stack is equal front to back. It feels good and I can spin the crank ok. I don't have the new piston and rings in yet and I bet it'll be a bear to turn over then.

Question - How do these main bearings get oil? Especially with the grooves in the crankshaft bearing surface situated so as to carry oil back into the crankcase, it seems like they'd eventually run dry. I don't want to set them up too tight. Is there that much of splashing going on in there to keep them oiled?

There is PLENTY of splash for lubrication. Too much I think.
The grooving in the crankshaft mains "screws" the oil through the entire bearing...............on more reason JD's puke oil out of every pore............unless it's a late one with a crankcase breather.
You're doing everything the right way-----keep it up.

I agee with the previous post, don't worry about then getting enough oil. They will likely get too much (as in oil will be flying out).

Thanks for the encouragement. I just know that my Model T mains have oil holes through the babbit and the rods have oil dippers on them and there's even an outside aux. oil line for the front main. I guess John knew what he was doing, just as Henry did.

Is 0.001" open on the mains the proper clearance? That still seems pretty tight. I have been using a dial mic to set my engine bearing clearances while shiming and usually shoot for 0.004 - 0.005".

I'm pretty sure I read here somewhere, to tighten 'em down till you feel a pretty good drag, (one bearing at a time), then add .001. That's what I did with my Model T a coupla years ago. Had to use the starter and the crank both (with my wife's help (she on the starter)) to get it turned over but after a few short trips she could crank it all by herself.
