Default Norman 6 HP single cylinder air cooled diesel

Has anyone on here any knowledge of a recently aquired engine please?
Its a vertical single cylinder diesel of 6HP @1800 Rpm, cast iron construction with generous finning, an alloy rocker cover, a tin fan shroud/cowling and a large open flywheel on the non fan side. The injector enters the head horizontally, and it`s fitted with a CAV 3 bolt injector pump similar to a Petter "A" series fitment. It runs very well after the usual stuck valves, plunger, delivery valve and injector needle remedies.
A Google search turns up plenty of references to Norman petrol engines but no diesels made by this company, maybe it`s a badge engineered engine but I`ve seen nothing like it. Will put a photo on when I work out how.
Thanks,
Mark.

Hi Mark,

This should be a Norman type 1B air-cooled diesel engine. There were sold by the Norman Industrial and Marine Engine Co Ltd of Uxbridge, Middlesex, just outside London. You guessed right, it's not built by Norman's but is in fact bought-in for resale from the Bradford Diesel Engine Co. of Shipley, Yorkshire. It's the air-cooled version of their type 1A water cooled diesel engine. This air-cooled diesel engine was supposed to be Norman's entry into the diesel engine market, but it fact it sold very poorly indeed, and very few examples survive today. The engine will date from 1960-1966, and if you supply the engine number I can tell you the exact date of sale and who it was sold to.

Hi Philip, Thank-you for your informative reply, I can`t see 1B on the id plate but the eng no is 103260. It appears to be an indirect injection engine as the injector projects horizontally int the cyl head, it difficult to start without oil priming and it runs quieter than air cooled direct injection types. Mark.

Hi Mark,
Well would you believe it, engine no 103260 is not recorded in the dispatch book !!
The other 103xxx engines are dated 1960 or 1961, but are mostly 1500 rpm engines.
There are several engines without a recorded engine number, but only one which is rated at 1800 rpm, so in the absence of other data I'm assuming that this is probably your engine.

So, with this assumption, engine no 103260 was dispatched to Arthur Lyon & Co of London on 20th December 1960. It was ordered by a Mr. Whittaker at Lyon and is specifically rated at 1800 rpm.

Now Lyon was a big customer of Normans, taking hundreds or maybe even over a thousand of the single and twin cylinder petrol engines. However, this is the only Norman diesel engine they ever purchased, just the one engine. Maybe it wasn't a success in the application they planned for it.

Hope that helps a little,
Phillip

Hi Philip, Thank-you for taking the time to find the history of my engine. It`s a possibility that it was intended for a 60 HZ alternator being rated at 1800 RPM. Mark.

That figures as the main business of Arthur Lyon & Co was the supply of generating sets of all descriptions to all and sundry, but especially the military.
